Funny - go back to your own board. If the queen had a dick, she'd be king.
Thanks for the insight Tarp.We would've scored 93 points and finished in 3rd place, 4.5 behind OSU and 30 points behind PSU.
We would've felt better with 3 champs, but it would still have been the 5th year of the past 6 that we failed to top 100 points; the silver lining might have obscured the magnitude of the task we face in generating those lost 30 points and reclaiming a national title, which is the goal we are presumably still focused on.

No, he could still be a Queen. This is the modern era.

Better question! What if one of our finalists finished a takedown?would have won? Team score? How different would you feel about Brands and program?

Hypothetical endings are not how you gauge what a program does or has done. If wishes were fishes we'd have a creel full.[/
art - good answer. I think more champs even in a 3rd place finish would help to get more top level recruits. To win we need better talent and more individual winners will help as wrestling is an odd 'team' sport. We would have had 92 points and finished third. And I would be unhappy, if a bit less unhappy.
Then we would have had 2 for whole day!Better question! What if one of our finalists finished a takedown?

It is a fact however, that two of the wrestlers only losses for the year were to the same guy. So unmatched or not they made the final and are better than all the rest at their weight, just not the best guy.The problem is, in two of those matches our guys were absolutely outmatched -- they had no chance of winning. So the scenario isn't realistic. Further, my belief is that today's top wrestlers have little interest in wrestling for a guy like Tom Brands. Outside of Iowa people hate Brands, they consider him to be crazy and far too intense. They think he would be absolutely no fun to wrestle for. I think even most Brands' supporters would acknowledge he is not well-liked outside of Iowa. Which means that for a lot of kids and their parent, Brands is sitting in a deep hole before the recruiting process even starts.
So here we are in a low population state, that is not even in the top 3 or 4 states in the country regarding high school talent, with a coach who is unappealing to a lot of people outside of Iowa. What are the chances that our recruiting is going to get better any time soon?
you make a great point. Saturday afternoon, I was thinking how important the 125 final may be in the Spencer Lee sweepstakes. Spencer and Nico are close friends, but if Gilman had won the NC, who knows where that would have led in the recruiting process. To me, and time will tell, but that may have been the most crucial loss suffered last week.Maybe it doesn't change a whole lot in terms of long term outlook as Tarp said but it would have made me feel a HELL of a lot better Saturday night if even just Gilman had won. He's my favorite Hawk currently and I felt terrible for him. The other 2 I didn't think had a realistic path to win, like artradley mentioned. It would also might have been a slight help in recruiting if we had one guy in the program hit his goal this year (others may have their goal to AA and not NC and if that's what's realistic I wouldn't knock that either, but nobody placed who shouldn't have been expected to).
This is the absolute truth. We were overpowered in both matches. No chance in either. 125 we could have won we beat the defending NC and then lost to a guy that couldn't beat the defending NC. Gilman is the better wrestler just didn't get it done. The problem is, in two of those matches our guys were absolutely outmatched -- they had no chance of winning. So the scenario isn't realistic.
