I saw elsewhere about how poorly the facilities were viewed by other coaches. And other things. I have no idea what we are missing........

In Oct 2019, Kenyon Murray wrote this:

My boys did their announcement and then turned off their notifications. They never wanted to do the showcases that “rate” players. They wanted to stay in the gym, work on their weaknesses and play the game the right way.

We have the facilities to compete with anyone, and I think having some very good home grown talent meshed with kids like Toussant, Ulis and Perkins (all major cities) will help open up recruiting in the future!

now that you mention it we could use some new hoops

I'd like to see a former player who has coaching ability added to the staff but that does not seem of interest to Fran.
There are former college players with head coaching experience on the staff right now. There aren't a lot of ex-Iowa players who have been head coaches though, especially not who played in the last 3 decades. Anyone older would probably be a relative unknown.

I really wish that Kenyon could be on the staff. I think he'd be an excellent assistant but I am not sure that he wants that lifestyle.

No, but I know a biased statement when I see one. Kinda like "We're a Final 4 caliber team" which was plastered all over this board all season.
Not by me. I was hoping we were a Sweet 16 team but I was holding my breath for no injuries. It wasn't meant to happen.

i haven’t been in the Carver weight room since Alford was coach but the weight room that is shared with several other sports was a joke. I‘m sure it has been updated but still WAY behind others in conference I still don’t think there is a basketball only strength coach like many of the B1G programs have. Not sure how many B1G schools have basketball practice facilities but most to- programs do. I’ve heard Iowa State’s practice facility is top notch. Bottom line, Iowa is bottom half of the league in basketball facilities.

Man, I agreed with you two times in 10 minutes. Although the defense improved, it was going to take some luck and good matchups for Iowa to be a Final 4 team. Could the Hawks have been able to get that point? I believe they could have but the likely finish was the elite 8 or sweet 16. I am extremely disappointed, but not shocked that we lost to Oregon.

Those expectations of final 4 or bust are on everyone who didn't recognize we were not athletic enough or defensive minded enough to beat really athletic teams. We have some of those guys now but the questions will obviously surround our offense.

OP is probably referring to my comments. I’ll attach the article in the link below. The article is over two years old now, but I’d guess it’s still more than accurate to this day.

There have been a lot of upgrades to CHA in the last 5 or so years, but not having to share practice time with other sports is probably the biggest thing, IMO. CHA is fairly dated, but it can get rocking when the fans/students show up.

There are newer/nicer arenas in the B1G: Nebraska, Wisconsin, Maryland, PSU, OSU. There are several schools that do okay with arenas as old or older than the schools above. Michigan, MSU, Illinois, Purdue, and Indiana do pretty good with accommodations they have.

LOL! Holy shit man, are you outdated! They built a completely new wing since then. Are you even a fan?

The dorms/living conditions are also a consideration in this equation. Kentucky is the gold standard with a special basketball dorm/house with a chef and 24 hour snacks/drinks etc. It's basically a Marriot Courtyard lol with more amenities. Not only do players want all the swag, they also want to be "special" which includes all the extra bells and whistles. Far down on that list is a degree in a solid program from a good school!

Most of fan base seem to ignore this. They think just the fact that all the schools in the conference have the same number of scholarships so it’s an even playing field right? Pikiell and McCaffery may never win a league championship but very well may be the two most over achieving coaches in the conference.

This is true. KY has a special campus for their bball team. And let's just say it's not put together for enhancing their education.

Very ex, apparently. What were you a letterman in? I hope not basketball...

Ya I’m old. i walked on in football under Hayden, then played baseball for two years so no I didn’t play basketball for Iowa. Used to talk to Maxwell regularly but haven’t for some time. I see him on the bench so I know he is still with the team. I live out of state and haven’t made it back for a while as I was busy coaching.. .i think I’ll stand by that the strength program is lagging most others in the conference as I have been in most of BIG facilities in the last ten years. How does Iowa’s compare to Nebraska, Ohio State, Northwestern, or Wisconsi? Those I have toured recently.

Thanks iahawks10! So I see no reason we can't raise the score on facilities, budget, and game atmosphere. Speaking of budget, don't we bring in some good money from BB games/TV? Do they spend it on other sports or what?

It probably has more to do with the age of the staff than the facilities.

Fran- 62 next month
Speraw- 64
Dillard- 65
Taylor- 48 in June

Weren't all the facilities upgraded in the past 10 years? Teams are no longer competing for practice time like they were and so on?

They hired a BB only strength coach decade ago. Keep swinging slugger.

This is true, and it was greatly publicized and reported. Much discussed, too. I am really surprised that any "fan" wouldn't know that, and someone who says he "knows" Bill Maxwell should know this. Either that or he knows him but never talks to him. ;)

And if you are an ex-letterman and NOT a fan, I really don't care what you think.
I guess I would reply to this by saying I turned down scholarship offers and even broke a signed letter of intent to walk on at my dream school the University of Iowa. I’ve named one of my dogs “Kinnick” and another “Hawkeye”.
