Supposedly, Iowa is in the Top 25 for NIL in football, and yet according to the spring depth chart the current starting receivers our $1 million dollar quarterback will have to throw to are RVZ, Jacob Gill, and Seth Anderson.

Is this a joke?

Does Iowa plan to be busy during the April portal window, or is Captain Kirk getting absolutely zero upgrades at wide receiver for 2025? I also see the secondary has zero new additions in personnel. Just the same names who were getting torched all of last season sans Quinn Schulte.

If Iowa doesn’t get some serious upgrades at wide receiver and in the secondary, they’re going to have a final record in 2025 that will make Scott Frost blush.

We brought in Sam Philips, a speedy WR from Chattanooga. We also have Wetjen and Buie who should be good this year. Terrence Smith, 6’4” WR will be a freshman next fall and the coaches are high on him. In addition we have an excellent group of tight ends and several running backs who are good as receivers out of the backfield. Our receiver group is looking good.

I hope you’re right.

What about the secondary?

What about the secondary?
I’ve listened to Heinrichs somewhat recently. He says they will be active in the spring. Definitely at DB, and likely WR too? I don’t specifically remember positions other than DB.

As Ladell said, Phillips seems like a pretty nice addition that isn’t on the depth chart since he just arrived in January.

I trust they will feel better about what their needs after the spring, but they will definitely be looking to bring in some players.

It takes 2 to tango. So even if there is a WR we throw a lot of $ at odds are some other big name school is too and we are still have some of the stink lingering from BF era and probably won’t get that kid. There is only so few QB spots open that gives Iowa a better shot after spots filled up but WR if they command big bucks they’ll want to go to a pass happy offense and get their targets. Easier said than done about going out adding high price talent at certain positions. Iowa needs to get mid major or FCS guy under the radar and hope they hit on something. Look at isu with Jayden Higgins came from E. Kentucky don’t think many people batted an eye when he signed and look at his stats last 2 years.

I think it was leistikow on radio said when talking about spring depth chart. Iowa actually has some depth at wr for once we just don’t have that go to guy. But least with Lester and gronowski passing game will continue making better progress.

We lost close to 50% of our offense production and nearly all of the scoring.

We have a lot of unknowns and unproven players.

And a QB coming off of surgery which we’ve seen that script before.

If we see in the fall open practice a complete cluster fk again trying to throw the ball further than 3 yards, it’ll be a long year again

We need secondary help...bad.
TJ Hall and Deshun Lee showed good improvement last season and have a lot of experience. Phil has had good things to say about their backups , Jaylen Watson and Rashad Godfrey. I think our corners will be solid, especially if the pass rush improves. Koen Entringer and Xavier Nwampa should be very good safeties, with Zach Lutmer backing them up. The secondary will be as good or better than last year.

I'm less worried about Hall but Lee was shown to be beat quite a bit. I think Watson and Godfrey could be fine. I'm not worried about Entringer... I'm very worried about X.

I would feel better with one more solid, experienced corner with what we have competing for the other spot.

That would be helpful, hopefully we can find one.

The whole back 7 is a concern. The LBs are giant question mark, which is to be expected, but in what we’ve seen from the secondary, it wasn’t good.
Another thing Heinrichs said. The coaches had no interest in looking for a LB in the portal. Quite satisfied with what is on campus.

They were trying get a corner in the portal last year, and never landed one. Obviously they know it’s a need.

I was impressed with Hall at the end of the year, but equally as disappointed with Lee as I was impressed with Hall. Hopefully both Watson and Godfrey develop into good corners, and they nab one in the portal.

X will finally be playing FS, where he naturally fits. I really don’t have any concerns about S.

I like Etringer in what I can recall. I don’t remember being impressed with either Hall or Lee. X has made way too many mistakes for how much field time he’s gotten. Hopefully the light bulb comes on for all of them but the secondary is my biggest concern for the second year in a row.

I do think the pass rush will improve. Llewellyn in particular has a lot of juice off the edge. Hurkett was solid but unspectacular last year. I would love to see Allen and Llewellyn getting the primary snaps but Hurkett will probably get a lot of 1 and 2 down snaps as he’s reliable against the run.

I do think they're happy with the current LB group. Probably see Sharar, Harrell, and Rexroth this season, all guys that have been talked about and have been in the system for three+ years. I know there's been good talk about the development of the young guys, in Weisskopf, Buffington, and Reis. Obviously when you have grey beards like Higgens, and Jackson, the young guns don't get much run. The coaches know what they have there.

With Higgins and Jackson taking extra year Iowa set up with 2 5th year guys as buffer this year for younger ones coming up. Obviously not as good I think be ok with those 2. Rexroth far less confidence. Bowl game looked like he had cement in his shoes running. I hope maybe we get a glimpse of one of the underclassman who moves past him in fall camp.

Maybe, but I've heard the staff likes him. I think it was just one of his first times playing more minutes and was indecisive. I could see hin being like Tarpinien, who blew up his last year plus.

We're trying to convince kids to come to Iowa to play WR.

The best ones (and if we're being honest, most all of them) are gullible, uneducated morons when it comes to what they know about and think of Iowa.

You do the math as to why we're not locking up talent in recruiting/transfers...............

The 3 experienced Lbkrs have the reps and in Parker's defense I would go with reps rather than a super 4-5 star frosh.

When I watch our defense there is so much communication pre-snap and one mis-step hurts since our defense isnt a massive blitz and pressure scheme.

But last year the defense iirc was way down on creating turnovers, especially INTs

If the CASH player is a stud then maybe our weakest Lbkr will not be on the field 50% of the time.

I firmly think that Christian Kirksey was a CASH back in the day. iirc he was playing at 220-230 lbs and fast

Hall played well the last few games…not so much before then. Maybe it was fools gold? Lee might just be over matched? It’s definitely there with Hall. Can he be consistent? Seemed like the light finally came on for him.

X is a FS and I think we’ll be happy with his play this year, and he did have a really good bowl game. Seemed like a fire got lit under his ass. Again, maybe fools gold?

If they don’t pursue any safeties in the portal, then we can probably relax on that one. I would almost guarantee they’re going to look for a CB.

I’d take a couple of DBs and a LB.

As was mentioned, the coaching staff said don’t even look for a LB. Heinrichs literally said that is what he was told.

Seems they feel it would be a wasted roster spot for other positions of more need? Other than maybe QB, it sounds like LB is of the least need in the portal.

We just haven’t seen these kids because we’ve had some great experienced LBs in front of them. Even if they were more talented, they weren’t going to play over Higgins and Jackson with their proven play and experience.

Yea, they clearly want CBs…

I think there's a real chance we get a significant step up in athleticism at linebacker this year, or next. It's impossivle to expect tgem to be Jackson and Higgins. SO much experience there. But Sharrar, Ries, Weiskopf. Buffington? i think many of those guys are superior athletes. there will be a learnibg curve but the future is bright there.

Yes...here I am bringing up Michigan again...but I'm doing so because the things I heard/know probably apply to Iowa...

Michigan needs help in its WR room also. Michigan did a pretty wide search, this past portal, and fell short. I heard this directly from someone I know for a fact knows...he can tell you what our coaches ' farts smell like...not that you'd want that info ...but he can...

Michigan was a no, from the start, for a lot of WRs because of agents. It didn't matter what we said to the kids or parents...the agents pointed their heads elsewhere. And it's not because of bad blood or anything...this includes agents that pushed kids to Michigan at other positions.

What they told the kids and parents is that it didn't matter what they say about opening up the O...they haven't shown you'll get more than 3-5 targets per game even if you the #1 guy. Our message was we just hired a new OC and landed the #1 QB in the country...we will throw the ball. The message back was I'll believe it when I see it...of course it's a chicken and egg thing...how can we prove it without WRs? Agents told them not to come here...and they weren't anti-Michigan...in fact we were one of their first calls at other positions were the agents felt we maximize their clients' value.

Which comes to second thing I heard...as players came off the board (during the last portal) prices started to skyrocket. Basic supply and demand but on crack. I happen to know of a couple kids (not WRs) whose agents said would be ours if we meet the price. I don't have to like it (and I don't) but we now play the NIL game. Michigan does now. But it doesn't mean funds are unlimited and we will spend unwise. They were basically asking for 3-4 times the price of players we already have who are less proven as they are younger and without experience. Michigan wasn't the only school to balk at the price...both ended up at schools that didn't have even close to the history (prestige + development) they were leaving. But now they are likely among the highest paid on their teams despite being average players.

So back to Iowa and why I wrote this...

We might not like this (I don't) but agents are the rulers now. It's not like when your drunk uncle tries to cash in. These guys come in with presentations of why or why not a certain school is a "fit." And it has nothing to do with were a kid will be happy and grow. It is 100% about maximizing value in dollars short term. The lifelong investment part is 90% gone.

Point being....good luck finding a WR in the next portal...agents don't want them at your school and even the price for mediocre will be too high

You need to give more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

You know what was wrong with our defensive backfield last year? Check out the games in which our DL got next to no pressure on the QB (and there were 3 or 4 good examples to look at). You give a QB that much time to throw and anyone's DBackfield is not gonna look good.

Its not like we can call dibs on a guy in the portal, there has to be mutual interest. Getting a WR here takes a hell of a sales job and we haven't had a great track record of portal guys jumping right into starting roles.

Saturday afternoon at 4:52pm, and you are on HR publicly wondering what Iowa is doing with the transfer portal........

Are you the joke?
