Supposedly, Iowa is in the Top 25 for NIL in football, and yet according to the spring depth chart the current starting receivers our $1 million dollar quarterback will have to throw to are RVZ, Jacob Gill, and Seth Anderson.
Is this a joke?
Does Iowa plan to be busy during the April portal window, or is Captain Kirk getting absolutely zero upgrades at wide receiver for 2025? I also see the secondary has zero new additions in personnel. Just the same names who were getting torched all of last season sans Quinn Schulte.
If Iowa doesn’t get some serious upgrades at wide receiver and in the secondary, they’re going to have a final record in 2025 that will make Scott Frost blush.
Yes...here I am bringing up Michigan again...but I'm doing so because the things I heard/know probably apply to Iowa...
Michigan needs help in its WR room also. Michigan did a pretty wide search, this past portal, and fell short. I heard this directly from someone I know for a fact knows...he can tell you what our coaches ' farts smell like...not that you'd want that info ...but he can...
Michigan was a no, from the start, for a lot of WRs because of agents. It didn't matter what we said to the kids or parents...the agents pointed their heads elsewhere. And it's not because of bad blood or anything...this includes agents that pushed kids to Michigan at other positions.
What they told the kids and parents is that it didn't matter what they say about opening up the O...they haven't shown you'll get more than 3-5 targets per game even if you the #1 guy. Our message was we just hired a new OC and landed the #1 QB in the country...we will throw the ball. The message back was I'll believe it when I see it...of course it's a chicken and egg thing...how can we prove it without WRs? Agents told them not to come here...and they weren't anti-Michigan...in fact we were one of their first calls at other positions were the agents felt we maximize their clients' value.
Which comes to second thing I heard...as players came off the board (during the last portal) prices started to skyrocket. Basic supply and demand but on crack. I happen to know of a couple kids (not WRs) whose agents said would be ours if we meet the price. I don't have to like it (and I don't) but we now play the NIL game. Michigan does now. But it doesn't mean funds are unlimited and we will spend unwise. They were basically asking for 3-4 times the price of players we already have who are less proven as they are younger and without experience. Michigan wasn't the only school to balk at the price...both ended up at schools that didn't have even close to the history (prestige + development) they were leaving. But now they are likely among the highest paid on their teams despite being average players.
So back to Iowa and why I wrote this...
We might not like this (I don't) but agents are the rulers now. It's not like when your drunk uncle tries to cash in. These guys come in with presentations of why or why not a certain school is a "fit." And it has nothing to do with were a kid will be happy and grow. It is 100% about maximizing value in dollars short term. The lifelong investment part is 90% gone.
Point being....good luck finding a WR in the next portal...agents don't want them at your school and even the price for mediocre will be too high
