What is the scoop on the S Dakota State game

It was close because the offense was awful. 54 yards on 32 rushing attempts for a 1.7 yard average. 8 TFL's and 3 sacks. 12 total first downs. 4/13 on third down. It was bad and it didn't really get better as the season wore on.
If I remember correctly we were missing Welsh and Daniels that game. One got hurt week before during ISU game and our running game suffered greatly and lot of questions after the fact with Wadley barely getting any touches. First drive CJ missed Kittle open for a 90+ yard td. Kittle got a phantom holding call on a long Daniels run that would've resulted in points. Remember early in 4th qtr right on the edge of fg range and on 3rd down bad snap cost us on a play where WR would've been open for a first. Just a lot of crap went wrong that day.

I did read on CBS sports today SDSU is #2 preseason for FCS. However I remember before 15' season we faced a top 5 ILL St. team and many on this board were fearing the worst and we took care of business that day.

I was talking about the CSU game from last year. Not sure what you are referring to.

Believe they have a very athletic dual threat QB that will give Iowa fits, but I expect the D will be up to the challenge
Yep, and 2 WR's that are legit. They like to run the ball, which works in Iowa's favor, except when the QB reads and darts for a 1st...

Iowa's Offense better be improved from the 1st snap or this will be too close of a game.

Fully expect a close game because A) SDSU has a really good team and B) it's game 1 of a long season. Hawks come ready to play and they should prevail in the 4th quarter.

I have alot of respect for good FCS teams that have a fall camp to prepare for us. I think Iowa is just too physical in the trenches defensively...and our offense should be able to run the ball.
The problem is when your strategy is "wait for the other guy to make a mistake" and they don't, the game stays close. That's a great approach when you're taking on a powerhouse and want to stay within striking distance. When you play a physically inferior team you should assert yourself early and often and demoralize them. The longer you let 'em stay in it, the more confidence they gain.

You're right. We should be able to "out-physical" them ultimately. But waiting until 4th quarter for that to happen can be a dangerous thing with a good opponent. They don't fold easily. See NDSU 2016.

Iowa's offense keeps every team in the game.
Correct.

Our defense may certainly be up to the task and hold them to 14-17 pts...............but there's no reason to think Iowa will avoid just barely scoring more than that, regardless of how hard they try otherwise.

It's what we do........

We’re not Ohio State or Georgia. We can’t sleepwalk past these guys and expect to win by 17+.

Not worried about the defense. They can hold SDSt to 14 barring some sort of unforeseen mishap, but we can’t sugarcoat the other side of the ball. We stank last year in every way imaginable. Part of that is a very green offensive line, so my guess is this years offense will go as the OL goes. If it improves enough to produce a competent rushing attack, it can open up the passing game. Our passing game - TEs excluded - has been nothing short of a national punchline, but it’s been that way for a long time. We pride ourselves on a strong offensive line, but we haven’t had a good (I can say we’ve been average some years, but not truly good lately) rushing attack in years, which makes our passing game suffer tremendously as well.

We’re a Big Ten team, so we better start acting like one. Run the damn ball. Even when it doesn’t work well, just stick with it because it will pay off with persistence and patience. Minimize turnovers, don’t commit silly penalties, and let the D do its thing and that should be good for a 2-score win 9 times out of 10. It won’t be much to look at in the stat sheet Sunday morning, but it also won’t give ISU much to look at for the following week either.
Well its been a few years, (six in fact) when we had two guys rush for almost 1100 yds each and average around 5.5 yds/ carry. Not to shabby in 2016.....

You are not remembering the NDST game well. They dominated Iowa physically. They ran for 240 yds while Iowa had maybe 40. Iowa went out and hired their oline coach the next season.
iirc Iowa had less than 250 total yds against them.
Hoping Iowa can control the line play this year

Well actually, what I remember most is without the fluky int TD by NDS the halftime score is 14-0 Iowa. That was a huge play. I remember NDS not moving the ball very well in Iowa territory the first half to have really any offensive scoring chances. My recollection was Iowa solidly won the first half.

No doubt Iowa's offense looked like some of the rusty, poorly prepared early Sept Kirk teams.

Wadley at 5 ypc only got 4 carries, go figure.

In the end, NDS maybe wore out the Iowa defense and really gouged them on the ground in the second half. It was a big loss for Iowa in what turned out to be a somewhat down year except for the Mich win.

A lot of good replies, thoughts, and info. We all hope and think the hawks can win this game. Get the run game going, move the chains, get some timely chunk yardage plays, score a lot and hold them down.

South Dakota State is a very good football team. They are picked for 2nd place in the Valley and are ranked #2 in the preseason FCS poll - behind NDSU in both.

The have 6 preseason 1st team All-Americans in FCS which is the most of any program. Three others are 2nd or 3rd team preseason All Americans.

One of those 6 is their running back who missed most of last season due to injury I believe. Two offensive lineman are 1st teamers - McCormick and Greenfield and it looks like they will play beside each other on the left side at G and T. The TE was a 1st team all American last season after an excellent season. Twin brothers at WR with one being a preseason 1st teamer. The quarterback did not play last season due to injury but he was the offensive MVP of the MVC in the spring 2021 COVID season. They have a LB on the preseason 1st team - a Solon kid - Adam Bock.

This is definitely not a team the likes of SEMO like ISU is playing week 1. They are good and Iowa needs to be ready to go right from the start.

I think we’ll be fine because the defense is going to rip them a new one. It could be closer than we like if this offense can’t get off the ground though.

Let's see those 1st teamer OL stop Lucas Hercules Van Ness.

2 things, BF wasn't the OC and SP wasn't the QB.

What all do they have? Can they really beat us? I know N Dakota State beat us but it was rather fluky when CJB gets blindsided and the ball pops up in the air and a defender grabs it and runs it in for a TD, iirc. N Dakota State didnt move the ball much in the first half. The hawks looked rough in that one and then a blatant holding by NDS lets their QB loose for a big gain to get to the winning field goal. Those are the ways teams get upset.

Does SDS have the offense to threaten our defense? If their offense is just average I see our defense handling them very well. If the SDS defense can't stop our running game I think the hawks will win.
Oh yes. They can beat us Ray.

South Dakota State can most definitely beat us Ray.

They’ll beat us in Iowa City. But then they’ll get bored & come to Dyersville.

Oh yes, South Dakota State can most definitely beat us Ray.

They did lose 4 FCS games last year.
Part of that is playing down to their opponents and playing 25 games in 10 months due to the spring season. They would have won the spring title if their QB didn't get hurt during the first possession of the title game but he's back and healthy. SDSU is the only FCS team to be able to consistently beat NDSU. 4-6 in the last 10 games between them
