What do you think Iowa's record is next season assuming or guaranteed we won't have:
Garza
Nunge
CJF
Wheezy
JBo

I say 14-15, 6-15 in conference.

I think you'll see a lot of low scoring defensive games where we win some ugly against better teams.

Just too much youth and lack of offensive firepower.

Probably something close to that. Still don't know what the roster will look like next year.

Well that “defensive” lineup that can’t score and turns it over all the time, that some posters were begging for half of last season will get lots of time.

12-17. Somehow Fran gets 3 more seasons (including next year) before he’s finally fired.

Barta will retire in a few years. He made Fran’s buyout for the next AD far more expensive with the ridiculous extension.
His retirement - voluntary, forced, or otherwise - can't come soon enough.

I'll even take a modest upgrade at this point.

New President will get to review Barta, so there’s a chance that Gary could take an “early retirement.”

Unlikely. The new President will probably be a "correction", and look a lot more like Hunter Rawlings or Sally Mason than Sandy Boyd. Not good for athletics.

If Wieskamp is gone they are going to be bad. Hard to have a record prediction without seeing the schedule but i would guess maybe 2 or 3 wins in conference.

I'll let you know after Chet Holmgren commits today

And why do you suppose there was "division" on the team?
CJF, Wieskamp, Bohannon, Nunge, Baer, and Ash all likely gone off last years team when all could have been back doesn’t really create the inference that they liked playing together.

The only player likely to return who wasn’t a freshmen or the coaches kid is Toussaint.

Maybe you could chalk it up to just the end of an era, but with the season being below expectations and offseason, maybe there was more to it.

It's mere speculation. But given the team's stated goals at the beginning of the season, there's no question Iowa had a disappointing season (which has been the case about every season for the past thirty years).

When a team with high expectations falls woefully short of their stated goals, there will naturally be some bitterness. Such and such a player will feel the team would have done better if their minutes had been increased, such and such a player will have problems with one or more of the coaches, such and such a player will have problems with one or more of their teammates, and on and on it goes.

All of that happens with any team that disappoints. That's human nature. However, when the coach's son is in the starting lineup, and it is obvious to anyone with a modicum of common sense that he shouldn't be, all of those aforementioned issues get amplified.

The fact CJ was a starter last year and would have most likely been a huge part of the offense this year, not to mention CJ's family's connection to Fran and his willingness to walk on at one point, should be a red flag. The fact Patrick McCaffery is referencing the Bible in what we can probably safely assume is regarding CJ's departure leads me to speculate there's some animosity between the Fredericks and McCafferys.

Next year's team is going to struggle to score points. Who are the outside shooters? Who are the post players we can rely on?

Maybe the D could have a little higher ceiling, but the W/L record won't be pretty. I'm not going to even try to predict an actual number, but I think it'll be sub-500 overall.

It will be fun to watch a bunch of young guys compete and grow. Last years team is making out to be more divided than thought. Maybe next years team can be more team oriented and turn that into a positive.
The cause of that division may still be on/with the team.

I think the team will still be competitive and entertaining. I think they will end up with 1-2 more transfers coming in and will be able to stay around .500 in-conference.

No prediction can be made until we have our roster finalized. With the 8 on campus and Sandfort and Mulvey we are around .500 overall. With a few key additions we will be on the bubble or in.

There are a LOT of good players in the portal yet, and some who may not have even announced or been added officially. I think Iowa will end up okay.

Yeah that's kind of the reason I put the date in the title of the post. The transfers are theoretical at this point. With the known commodity of the squad we have and perhaps adding some transfers, I just don't see making the tourney next season.

With CJF on the team next season I didn't expect to make the tourney. That's not meant to be an indictment on the players we have now at all. They're just very young and relatively inexperienced. We lost a TON in Garza, Nunge, JBo, and Weezy!

I would love to be proven completely wrong. There's always a chance we pick up a couple good transfers for key positions and the guys already here improve leaps and bounds next season given the increase in minutes.

I just know how Iowa basketball generally works. It's cyclical. You build up a team and once they're mainly upperclassmen you have the ability to win Big Ten championships and make a deep run into the NCAA tourney. Then you kind of rebuild for a couple years.

I agree. Last year Iowa won some games with Garza not scoring that much and CJ hurt and not playing. At times during the season the 2nd unit came in and outplayed the 1st unit and provided a big lift. Fran however always went back to his starters in the 2nd half of games and the 2nd unit didn't play as much. He is loyal to his upperclassmen and so it is difficult to gauge what the freshman are capable of doing with the exception of Keegan who Fran had to play because of the injury to Nunge.

Kenyon Murray earlier in a post during the season indicated that there were no plays set up for Keegan when somebody complained about Keegan trying to do too much during one of the games. Ulis and Perkins probably were in the same boat and so they didn't show their offensive side when they got into games because they were out there to provide defense. Kris Murray rarely played at all but he did show some athletic moves when he did play. I think that we may be pleasantly surprised this year by the athleticism of the young Iowa players. As one poster indicated, there was very good chemistry on the court between Joe T and Patrick M and also Keegan. Kris may supply more chemistry and Ulis and Perkins will become more offensive minded. Iowa will definitely be a lot quicker. I too think that we are around a .500 season right now with our current players. Lets see now how the Portal plays out

Poll please...tia!

My assumption would be more experienced guys playing over more talented ones. Thats never great for chemistry.

Wasn't CJs whole gripe that he was angry about lack of PT?

JBO and Connor played way more than they should have.

Can't wait.

I've seen enough "assist to turnover" back to the basket 60 feet from the hoop dribbling, terrible forced shots and pathetic defense to last me a lifetime.
