What needs to happen for Iowa to breakout and finish Top 10 for the sixth time under KF?

This is a new team in 2021, as HC Kirk Ferentz always proclaims, each January.

  • 10-3 in 2019
  • 6-2 in 2020
  • 5 losses by a combined 19 points
  • 22 games holding opponents to 24 or less points
  • Unlike several opponents, Iowa returns each of their coordinators for 2021
Iowa won Big Ten titles in 1981 (Kirk's first season as OL coach), 1985, 1990 (KF was HC at Maine), 2002, 2004 and played in their first Big Ten Title game in 2015 (only appearance in program history).

The Hawkeyes do have a good history, behind Ohio State and Wisconsin. Of course, let's not discount Michigan or Penn State, who have done well, over last 40 years.

The Nebraska win 1981 was huge for the Hayden Fry era. Iowa beat two Top 20 programs in the first three games back in 1981.

Not since 1981, does Iowa face two programs right out of the gate like 2021, with IU and the annual CyHawk Game against Iowa State, in Ames.

Northwestern and Purdue were the two big thorns for the Hawkeyes last season.

The Big Ten has a couple of storylines to follow as the 2021 season unfolds:
  • Quarterback play - plenty of unknowns throughout the league
  • Other than in Columbus, defensive fronts have questions, with plenty of teams talking about their back 7 more than their defense as a whole
  • Iowa had the second scoring offense in 2020 and won final 6 games, but lost their top two wide receivers and a very productive RB in what was a two man room basically the past two seasons
Ohio State and Iowa return 12 all-Big Ten performers to lead the Big Ten heading into 2021?

Players who received at least honorable mention?

The Big Ten Network flashed the stat yesterday, talking to Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz and three players, Zack VanValkenburg, Tyrone Tracy and Tyler Linderbaum. All good choices and stories on this 2021 team.

Iowa is #12 in only returning 71% of their production in 2021. The Hawkeyes were one of the youngest programs in FBS and among P5 programs in 2020. Only eight scholarship seniors, compared to programs in the West, not named Northwestern.

Does Pat Fitzgerald consider this his most talented team in Evanston? Rumor mentioned in Indianapolis.

Will Iowa O-Line be among the best during Kirk Ferentz's 30+ years at Iowa?

Like many programs around the Big Ten, Iowa will have new starters among the defensive line. For the third straight season, Iowa only returns one starter among the defensive line.

How many trophies can Iowa defend or garner in 2021?

Could covid-19 stir its nasty head again in the Big Ten in 2021?

Iowa is primed for a breakout season. It has been six years, since they have been to Indianapolis.

There are plenty of roadblocks and they come early, right out of the gate.
