Iowa will lose a lot of talent this year. I have a hard time seeing them near the top of the Big 10. What are your predictions. I'm not sure they will make the tournament.

All dependent on transfers at this point. With CJF, I would have said 9th. Without him and not knowing transfer situation, I'll say 12th with about 5 or 6 conference wins. I think likely transfers would push us back up toward that 9th or 10th finish in the Big Ten.

Having said that, I think their progression the year after could be huge with the big time experience and the year after that, contending for a Big Ten title if things go well. A whole lot of ifs and speculation in everything I've said. I'll be cheering them on no matter what and trying to stay positive.

I'm thinking about 9th. I do think Iowa starts off slow, but the guys end up gelling and start winning, albeit too little, too late for the Dance. I do think a deep NIT run is possible though.

The 2018-2019 season we were picked to finish 10th in the conference in the preseason polls and I think we ended up finishing 6th that year and a 7 seed in the tournament... Then in '19-'20 we were picked to finish 8th but finished 5th in the conference.... You guys are mistaking the unsuccessful tournament appearances with this overall coaching ability, Fran actually does a lot of his best work when expectations are low and I wouldn't be surprised if next season is similar to 2018-2019

What were we picked preseason ‘17-‘18? Because we finished 11th.

Teams Iowa will likely finish behind:

Michigan
Michigan State
Ohio State
Purdue
Illinois
Maryland
Indiana
Wisconsin
Northwestern

Teams Iowa will likely finish ahead of:

Nebraska
Penn state
Minnesota
Rutgers

I’m revising my prediction to 8-12.

I will go with 10th with what we have now and each piece we add will move us up a spot.

Id go ahead and slide Indiana, Wisconsin and Northwestern on down a few peggs.

But to each their own.

What a genius move by Barta with that contract extension! Gotta keep UNC and the Lakers' mitts off our guy!

I don’t get why people care so much about extensions. It’s how the coaching business works. If your contract runs out in less than 4 years it’s used against you in recruiting, that your job security is shaky. Coaches get fired with a lot of years left on their deals all the time. Either Fran is coaching or he’s not, the extension is meaningless and no program is firing a coach after getting a two seed in the tournament.

Maybe. I think IU will be much improved. Way too early for these kinds of predictions anyway. Other than Michigan and Purdue anyway....
Theres a lot of unknowns.

I thought IU was losing more players but looks like new coach reeled some of the starters back in so you could certainly be correct.

Im not going to give any of it much thought until October. To much is going to change still.

If the extension is meaningless, then why give it?

Maybe the extension has less importance if there are deep donor pockets who will make the program flush in the event of a buyout AND there's a competent AD in control. I have no idea about the former and the answer to the latter is a solid no. Coaches do get fired at other programs for lack of post season performance. The chances of that happening with Fran is miniscule. He's already hung around longer than many coaches would have with his post season track record.

Continued poor post season performance doesn't usually equal multiple extensions and bonuses over a 10+ yr coaching tenure. Even at middle of the pack programs like Iowa.

Bottom half. They couldn’t win bog with the player of the year.

get serious.
But what happened with an entirely different set of players is irrelevant.

No matter what its not a factor this year with the current players.

You can think they will suck but you need to base that opinion on the current team not the team that no longer is in order for the opinion to make any sense.

Because you have to for recruiting. Do you see many coaches get let go because their contract expired? No coaches get fired, having an extension or not has no impact on that.

Would you have fired Fran after this year?

I would have fired Fran before this year

What great recruit that's coming in would they have missed out on had he not gotten the extension?

I'm not sure where they'll finish, but I am interested to see how Fran mismanages his personnel in big games next year.

I keep reading these posts about Fran needing an extension in order to recruit. Odd, I thought that is what the $20 million + he has been paid over 10 years was for. Was there an imminent threat that Drexel or Hofstra was going to make a run at Fran? On the bright side, it is literally impossible for Fran to start 5 white guys next year, so at least the optics around Iowa hoops will improve if not Fran's recruiting.
