What place does Iowa finish in the Big 10 next year??

who thinks Iowa finishes .500 and makes NCAA bubble?

I recall many games where the 2nd team significantly extended leads, many times with Nunge, but not always because of Nunge (but sometimes yes because if Nunge), and they routinely did so by preventing points.

murray was elite at D, JoeT and Perkins were plus at D, with PMac showing plus rebounding and shot blocking.

wiyhout JoeW / Luka they maybe challenged to score, but the defense will lead to offense.

they could very well be a MD type of team

“elite” and “plus” compared to what? The other players on the roster?

Not one of those adjectives applies if you are comparing them to other B1G program players. Compared to actual elite programs line Baylor? Or hell... even a program like Oregon.... don’t make me laugh.

When I read things like this, I have to wonder what people are actually looking at while watching games.

So you would have fired him with a POY candidate and preseason top 10 team returning?
To be fair, he didn't specifically say that Fran should have been fired just prior to the 2020-21 season. Firing Fran after the 2017-18 season would have made some sense as Iowa was clearly showing signs of regression (finishing 4-14 in the B1G and 14-19 overall).

My prediction

Michigan
Purdue
Indiana
Maryland
Michigan State
Ohio State
Illinois
Wisconsin
Iowa
Nebraska
Rutgers
Nebraska
Northwestern
Minnesota
Penn St

I do feel Indiana is definitely the most improved team and them and Purdue will challenge Michigan. Nobody upgraded their coaching staff more than IU did. They also landed 3 of the top transfers, a top 25 guard, and a top 75 C. Brought back an All-American F and several other players with Big Ten experience.

That’s a fair point if you think he should have been fired then, but since they didn’t then I don’t see where it makes sense to fire him at any point after that. And especially not after this season. Your ceiling is what it is until you go beyond that. I think a couple years ago no one would have said Fran could get us a two seed in the tournament.

I am guessing you are not familiar with advanced analytics? And how Murray performed in those?

murray‘s defensive #’s are comparable to Mitchell and Butler of Baylor

When I read posts like “ what are you watching.” I would ask “ what are you reading to support your singular opinion?

It doesn't make sense to fire him now. He's built up enough rapport to keep his job even if 2021-22 and 22-23 are duds. It's going to take some serious violations to show him the door before 2024 IMHO.

His tournament record is mediocre, but Fran pretty consistently delivers 18-22 win seasons. I think the NIT is a reasonable goal to shoot for this coming season, anything more would be gravy.

With what we have coming back ... and with our .500 Big Ten-record coach ... I say we finish 10th or lower ... Many teams are getting better in the Big 10 and bringing in some nice recruits ... Fran peaked this year ... this was as good as it gets ... Take away POY, CJ, JBo, Weezie ... it could be a very ugly season ...

I disagree, it’s going to be a fun great year with lots of exciting plays by the players we have that want to be Hawkeyes. Yes I’m serious

I like your optimism ... I do ... I just don't see we have the talent or depth ... Yes, I think the team will have fun moments to watch on the court ... I just don't think they have the talent to overcome what will be a very good conference ... Nebraska, Minnesota, Northwestern, Rutgers ... will all be better ... and that's not factoring in the Michigan's, Ohio State's, Michigan State's, etc ...

8th. At first, I thought dead last, but second guessed. Fran does not do well as a front runner, his teams lwiltng down the stretch. Perhaps starting slow with understandably rock bottom expectations, he can pick up the pace and finish mid-pack. Hello NIT!

That exactly sums up my feeling right now.

If you don't think Toussaint and Perkins are excellent on ball defenders based on watching them, well then you're just wrong.

They need to clean up some mental aspects like, not going under screens but that will come with experience and watching tape.

Statistically Keegan is one of the best defenders in the conference, which is equally obvious by watching him.

Iowa will be a very good defensive team at a minimum next year. That is in fact the reality of the situation.

10th and outside ncaa bubble, but get in the nit. ugh. This can change if Iowa gets 2 very good players out of the portal but since Fran looks elsewhere for his talent, I will stay with 10th.

I'd say this is pretty close. We have some good players. Keegan will continue to play great, he'll be a key cog the next few years. I think PMac will have a great year and become more of a scoring threat. We have guards with potential, Perkins seemingly with the most immediate impact.

Beyond that, it's pretty iffy. We lost a lot of talent, a lot of production and our roster is relatively thin (pun intended) and young. It will take breakout seasons by a couple of unexpected players to get this team to the NCAAs next Spring.

8-11

I hope so! I want to eat my own words!
I think that we will finish 6th in the B!G and have a .500 record in the B1G. We don't know what we have offensively with Ulis, Perkins, and Kris Murray but Fran knows because he has seen them play all year in practice. I believe that based off of what little we have seen from Perkins, and Ulis that they are capable of filling the offensive void left by JBO and Frederick. (They will certainly add more defensively). Frederick averaged 8.0 points a game this year and I would think that Perkins could duplicate that stat by his ability to drive to the basket or take the 10 to 15 ft shot. Ulis may not have the range of Bohannon but his quickness should get him open looks. JoeT is one of the quickest guards ever to play at Iowa and should benefit from a bigger role and more playing time. If Kris Murray plays similarly to his brother Keegan then we could have a decent frontline with Keegan, Patrick, and Kris. If we are able to recruit Filip from the Portal, then Iowa should have the depth needed at Center and at PF.

Where will we make up the points scored by Luka? Fran offensively has played mostly in the past with low scoring Centers. (Woodbury). I believe that Fran will build this team offensively with more balanced scoring from the starting 5 with more emphasis on fast breaks and less on 3 point shooting and feeding the ball into the Center. Offensive pace and defense will be the key to the success of this team.

But what happened with an entirely different set of players is irrelevant.

No matter what its not a factor this year with the current players.

You can think they will suck but you need to base that opinion on the current team not the team that no longer is in order for the opinion to make any sense.
I am basing it on Frans entire time at Iowa.

he isn’t that great of a coach. When he had a great roster he underwhelmed.

it’s not difficult to surmise.

Great roster is a big stretch.

Some great offensive players who weren't good defensively and were half injured by March.
Great roster with all those 3-4 star non NBA players....
oh wait, Cook just signed a 1 yr deal......

7th or 8th, comfortably on the bubble. And I’m OK with that.

If Fran adds an athletic wing (no idea if we’re in the mix for one or not), then upgrade a place or 2.

I hate that a chunk of next season’s success comes down to how many minutes CMac plays. The dude just isn’t good.

I am confident they end up in the top half of the Big. If Weezy comes back I'm saying 4th. I really believe we have a much better team than a lot of people are predicting. I think the defense is going to be stout and with Rebracka transferring in we have a shot at surprising a lot of teams and fans.

With Rebraca's commitment, I say we finish ahead of Northwestern, Penn State, Nebraska, Rutgers, Minnesota & Wisconsin. So I guess 8th and a bubble team.

There are still a few unknowns we don't have the answers to yet. Is Wieskamp staying or going, will we pick up another transfer? With the roster the way is right now I believe we are better than at least 4-5 other teams in the B1G. Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

McC has only finished lower than 7th twice - his first year and 2017-18. I seriously doubt that Iowa will slip below 8th place this year.

Directly above Minnesota and Nebraska.. So, i'm saying league finish will be 12th.

Then again, I have no idea how good the North Dakota transfer is or will be against higher competition. Final answer: in the 7-12 range.

It could be an exciting year with new players doing things and Iowa finish 10th or 11th. Highly likely to happen, in fact.

It will be a lightning rod to be sure. It has a bad situation written all over it.
