Neither one has a place in the other. The Constitution guarantees the one. The other.....well, folks love to tell others what they need to do.
A re-visit of the "tax exempt rules" would help clarify the one, too......but the religious folks will NEVER Vallow that to occur.

When tied together they are awful, see sharia law and many beliefs via Christian nation.

Government and Religion are to be separated in the public
square of America. Government has the task to protect
the public on the local, state, and federal level. We have
policemen, state troopers, and the army, navy, air force,
and marines at the appropriate levels.

We have mayors, governors, and the president who lead us
on those levels. We have city councils, state congressmen,
and U.S. senators and representatives. Government is necessary
to keep law and order in our nation.

Religion is option for some people who want to have spiritual
guidance in their personal life. As George Washington told our
nation, we need the moral and ethical dimension of religion to
keep our country upright and good.

What about the tax exempt rules? Google McCulloch v Maryland for an answer.

The nation of Norway has Lutheranism as the official
religion of the land. They seem to be doing just fine.
Every country needs some morality to anchor the
citizens in a good environment.

Yeah, no. Sorry.

But if you have real clergy questions I'm happy to answer.
What religion and are Mormons Christians by your theology? In your case does clergy mean priest or reverend or what ever the main preacher role is called in your faith or are you more like a deacon or nun or monk or elder?

Neither is inherently harmful.

I would say bad government is worse then bad religion simply because it has more temporal power.

However good government has more ability to help people (on earth anyways) then good religion for the same reason.

The prison population in the US is 80% Christian and less than 2% atheist.

I am a mainline Protestant. I have a Masters of Divinity degree and am ordained. In my tradition, this is the definition of clergy.

I tend to let people self-identify rather than placing labels. While I am not overly studied on the details of the Mormon faith, I believe that they self-identify as Christians and I would respect that as such.

Considering for 1000 years the Roman Catholic Church served as both, how do you break that down? I'd say both have that potential.
