What's going on with Iowa hoops?

Team seems a little more focused after the ISU win.

Baer coming out of nowhere with his grit and hustle have been contagious.

Veteran team did not get rattled on the road in a hostile environment.

I sometimes believe Fran teams tend to advance through agonizing defeat (ISU). And don't discount the fact Iowa plays mostly juniors and seniors.

I just wish they shot free throws better...with the caveat that they had to be gassed coming down the stretch tonight, expending so much energy to get back in it.

On the other hand, I think these seniors may have learned something about competing from the walk-on freshman, Mr. Nicholas Baer, the dynamo who hit some key shots and made some key plays again tonight at crunch time. The kid plays the game right...all out all the time. And he has ice water in those Bettendorf veins.

Iowa's got senior leadership including 2 PGs and Woodbury, a star in Uthoff, another great junior shooter in Jok. But the secret weapons I think are Uhl and Baer. As the top subs at 6'9" and 6'7", they make the rotation taller than it appears from the starting lineup. Both are becoming good and mobile players and both shoot over 40% from 3, which at their height makes it hard to keep Iowa from getting key 3s in games like @PD.

I know what Flint was thinking....Damn, we were supposed to be tied with Iowa after today. Yea, we've got too tough a schedule for sure in January and I know what other teams are thinking. That's why Jarrod said on the post game..this team has some nuts. They are pretty big flint, that's what is going on.....just salute and walk away after that road win.

Lots of posts in this thread I like but how bout Dom tonight knocking down those 3 pt shots....if he and Baer continue their play as Canada is saying......this team will be hard to beat home and away.

The score was 13-13 in the first half and 37-20 at the half. Final score was 70-63. You tell me what's going on. That's the inverse of the Iowa St game. Maybe Iowa has figured it out? I have no clue.

OP ..., great start for us but we will lose some games coming up. The schedule remains tough.

What's lost by outsiders is how close we have been to being much better known program over the past couple of years. We have a lost a number of games down the stretch in Frans tenure after leading. We have had problems closing teams out. We also collapsed a couple of years ago down the stretch with a pretty good team. Not to mention the B1G is loaded with great teams and tough places to play.

This year we lost 2 tournament games with a lead with a minute to go and 1 road game at highly ranked Iowa State after leading by 20 and by 8 with 2 minutes to go. We are a couple minutes from being unbeaten.

We are much better shooting team this season and this is the difference. Shooting has been an issue in previous seasons when we had good defensive and scoring teams otherwise. We also have some guys who have played a lot of games in this conference.

This season we are not as deep in the post as previous seasons. That's an issue as is rebounding.

The thing that is frustrating about Uhl is he's so indecisive. You can just see he wants to do something then decides not to. It reminds me allot of Uthoff two years ago.

I was really hoping to see him go at those bigs for Purdue off the dribble.

Yea Roll....I said this in bold in another thread down about Uhl. He wants to cause he really can but is being hesitant but I saw a bit more go tonight and was just smiling :) when he did. It's coming....he works hard in the gym and has too many skills to not do more and he will.

0 rebounds in 15 minutes. He just needs to learn how to play hard and he'll be a huge asset.

Agree. The surprise emergence of Uhl and Baer as 3 point threats makes this a very dangerous and difficult team to play.

Rebounding was our biggest weakness 3 weeks ago, but they have gotten much better of late. We don't have to dominate teams with the other things that we do well but, if we can keep it close on the boards, we have a good chance in every game. Tonight Purdue got us by one rebound. It's an attitude thing, and we seem to have found more attitude. Plus the guards are helping more.

we can't continue to rely on uthoff for entire halfs but we managed tonight.

Taking his stats out we were 2 of 19 in the first half. Just plain awful. I really expected us to roll over and the opposite happened. Too bad Fran couldn't have talked to the football team about 24 hours prior.

When on, Iowa is as good as any team in the country and will be an extremely scary match up.

Need to go big? We can do that.

Need to go smaller/quicker? We can do that.

Easily the best shooting team Fran has had and that alone can win some big games or upset anyone on any night.

I do think Fran pushed all the right buttons tonight. Which doesn't always happen. From match ups and sub combos to defensive game plan on their bigs and adjustment at half. That was good to see

No come back is too big. You better play a full game vs iowa.

There are great role players and a star and they've shown that they are more than just a team with a star.

Free throws. Clutch free throw shooting is a weakness.

I think they try to get JU going early, and in turn, do rely on him to get things started. If he gets it rolling like he has been they're going to keep feeding him as he can demoralize opponents. He had everyone's jaw dropping tonight, it was fantastic.
