Whats worse? Our boards reaction to this game or the teams play?

I'll go with the boards comments. Good god. Remember where we were during Lickliter yrs. Fran has program on solid ground. This was fun team, that we knew has a weakness. It ran into a team that could show that weakness. Move on

Some people get angry at the coach. Some get angry at the players. Some get angry at other posters. It's all the same. Nobody likes a loss.

It's natural to be negative after a loss like that. I think it's more than fair to criticize Fran's personnel decisions today.

Whatever is said on this board has zero impact on how Fran coaches and twitter is where the player's get abused.

Given the player's goal was BIG10 title, deep run in NCAA, I would venture to say the player's are more disappointed than fans and nobody gives a chit what his posted on this board by a bunch of old guys.

Personal attacks on players are always off limits. Should never be any of that. Ever.

I have no problem with anyone criticizing the team's sh!t performance today or Fran's terrible in game decisions. Fran's overall poor NCAA tourney performance at Iowa is fair game as well.

We can all decide on our own what we think defines a season. For me, it's the NCAA tourney result first and foremost. Anything else as to team achievement, or lack thereof, is much further down the list.
Fran's NCAA tourney performance at Iowa is meh at best, and after this many years with him at the helm I am comfortable in calling it disappointing.
This year is the culmination of that disappointment. A team that had enough pieces with plenty of veterans and the national POY to at least make the sweet 16 and yet failed to do more than win a first round game.

...actually, it's not starting this thread as a poll.

please tell me what in game decision Fran could have made today that would have made any difference in the outcome?

Fans mean fanatics and they tend to vent when completely disappointed in their team's performance in a big game. Hopefully they will be respectful when they vent.

This plus CJ, Cmac and Weezy hurt

and don't forget Nunge.

Oregon came in full strength after having injuries earlier in the season, Iowa had 3 starters at less than 100% and our key bench reserve out for the year.

This was not a good matchup for us today. I pretty much gave us 3 shots at winning this game.

Bohannon and CJF would be hot and knock down a lot of shots
Oregon would be ice cold from the field
A positive Covid test for Oregon prior to tip.

Nothing. It was athletes that can create their own shot vs marginal athletes that can’t. Add in Altman coached circles around Fran. Need to recruit better and play stronger man to man. And hire a defensive specialist like Beilein did a few years ago. Barta at the very least should of demanded this as part of the extension.

I was beyond concerned when I saw them as the 7 seed throw in they didnt play the 1st game just ****ing sucks. They have no bench playing a game vs a VCU who presses all game could have impacted their shooting today.

I'm punching the next mother ****er who says lickliters name as an excuse for Fran in the face.

Seriously...

Fran has been coaching this program for ELEVEN FULL SEASONS.

When the hell does he stand on his own and stop getting body of work bonus points for simply not being Lickliter? Ever?

It’s beyond ridiculous at this point to keep mentioning lickliter.

You really mean that? So after watching us get torched for 56 pts in the 1st half Fran went in and said let’s go starters, we’re going to play man and CJ, we know you can’t really move, so let’s put you on the player of the year. JBO, you try and stay in front of their pt guard. We were up 38-34 in the 1st half. The subs plus Luka were the ones who got us there. Oh, and I forgot Connor now needs double hip surgery, let’s get him out there. F’ing brilliant.

I think the board is fairly even-keeled considering. I think it would have been far worse if we hadn't all been seeing how underrated the PAC12 was this weekend. It's hard to ignore the poor personnel decisions in a game of this magnitude.

I don't know if it would have led to a win or not, but I'm guessing that playing Joe T, PMac, and Murray instead of JBo, CJ, and Cmac at the end of the first and beginning of the second wouldn't have resulted in a -20 performance in less than 8 minutes. That's something he could have done in-game. That's what I wanted him to do, anyway.

I agree, but if we look at minutes played Connor and CJF played less than 13 min. and JBo less than 19 min.

I had hoped we'd get something from JBo and CJF. Connor really hasn't been playing much or well of late and now we know why.

Honestly I was more disappointed today in Keegan's performance. Really needed a big game from him. Not going to knock his effort because that's there.... just didn't hit some open shots that were there and make the impact that he often does.

Oregon hit their open shots, we didn't.... and they had too many open shots.

What I like about our core of players returning next year is that they all have some defensive abilities. Looking forward to watching that team grow into their own identities.

Bohannon should have gotten half the minutes that he did. Toussaint, Perkins and Ulis all should have been given more of his to try to slow the onslaught of the opposing guards against whom JBo was completely overmatched.
I wouldn't have given Connor any minutes.
CJF was ineffective. He didn't play much either but I would have shaved a few of his as well.
Retroactively, I would have played Kris more during the regular season to prepare him for the tourney, with his minutes coming mostly from Connor.

Would that have been a winning formula? Who knows? I don't think, though, that it's only today in game. It's also about what was done throughout the season, who was given minutes in what situations, what players were directed and assigned to do in game scenarios. The game today wasn't just lost today, it was lost in part through the many choices Fran made over the course of the season.

This. When he took out Toussaint, Patrick and Perkins and brought in Jordan and CJ with Connor even my buddy a Pac 12 fan was like what is your coach doing!?!? What was worse is he put those guys back on the court together when the game had opened up to a fast paced up and down the court game. Fran saw this error much too late and with just a few seconds left brought Perkins and Toussaint back in. Fran doesn't learn and his lineup to start the 2nd half ended the game with 15 mins to play.

For all those making all these injury excuses. Where was Fran then? If you know or see your guys can't guard these guys then why do you keep putting them out there. The game was over by the time he realized Jordan, CJ and Connor were lame ducks out there.

I’ll start with pulling Joe T. and PMac both of whom had this team rolling up 4 late in the first half.

You remember, right before OR went on a 14-0 run to effectively end the game.

Patrick showed in the first half what his future could bring. Joe T gave solid minutes as well. Joe and Pat have great communication on the floor, especially in transition. This should be fun to watch going forward.

I noticed this as well. Hopefully thats a good sign next year

lol.... really? Had he played to many of the freshman and went 10-12 Deep he would have been criticized again for playing to many guys.

He did it at about the 3 minute mark. We miss a few open 3s..... they decide to shoot 60% from the field...... Not really on those guys IMO or fran. They were HOT. We were not. That is what happens when we rely on the 3 all year.

2014-2020: Fran needs to shorten the bench and knock the rotation down from 10-12 down to 8.

2021: Fran needs to play the bench more. Iowa needs both Murrays, Ulis, and Perkins playing 11 guys.

Tony, Joe T and Ahron played a lot today, which many in this board have been requesting. They made some good plays, but made a lot of mistakes as expected.

This shows why the NCAA tournament is such a crapshoot. Oregon was a team built to exploit Iowa’s weaknesses (slow feet on defense and poor rotations on three point shooters). Fran hoped that his offensive team could outscore Oregon, which did not happen.

Overall, it was a disappointing finish to the year. Unfortunately, we are used to that as Iowa fans. On the bright side, this opens up more time for me to watch other things on TV and begin to build expectations for next year. Fran just signed an extension and I will root for him and the team as long as he is the coach. Hopefully, the B1G takes stock of the poor performance by the teams this year and makes some changes to try to become more competitive. I will not get my hopes up though.

Not by me.

I would have had Connor getting essentially no minutes as the year progressed. CJF wouldn't have been forced to play as a wounded duck, the way he did most of the latter part of the season, as Perkins would have been more ready to shoulder some of his time. And of course, Bohannon would have ceded many of his minutes to Ulis and JT. Essentially I would have left Wieskamp and Luka's minutes alone and done some heavy redistribution of the rest of the available minutes among the younger more athletic players who are better defenders.

It was never going to happen, but that's what I would have liked to have seen.

How about not playing 20 games in conference and playing 18 again.

I remember where we came from. And I'm happy we aren't there anymore.

But that doesn't excuse a two seed getting kicked out of the tournament in the round of 32. Fans have a right to be upset at several things, as long as the target is coaching or administration. If the target turns to a player then that starts crossing the line. The players do the best they can, it is up to the coach to have better players or not play the ones that aren't up to snuff in any game. For the most part it seems that people have stayed away from targeting the players specifically aside from asking about coaching decisions around why are we playing specific people so much.

College Basketball is a big business today. There's a reason Fran gets paid 7 figures and he better be able to deal with people second guessing or outright complaining about his decisions.
