Our opponents to date have combined to win 59% of their games. This is the highest percentage of any undefeated team. Why are we not out there promoting ourselves? Don't tell me the SID can't influence perception. Manti Teo almost won the Heisman. Does that office have footprint that extends beyond the I-380 corridor?

I don't think you get the difference between SID and marketing.

A sports information director is a type of public relations worker who provides statistics, team and player notes and other information about a college or university's sports teams to the news media and general public.

Marketing is the process of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service.

What am I missing?

That if an SID starts calling reporters and telling them what they should report on A) that's not their job. B) every reporter would be like screw you I'm not writing crap stop bugging me.

The SID's job is to coordinate media relations. Not to promote a story/program.

We don't have to promote ourselves, we just need to keep winning. Go Hawks!

IDK, I think Iowa's hype machine should sit tight ... things will work out on their own if we keep winning.

totally agree - i don't care if we're in the news right now. we'll write our own stories with a few more wins......

Promoting ourselves, really?!?!?! I think the marketing for the football program matches our states mindset. I do not think the culture in the great state of Iowa is about promoting ourselves and neither does our football program and I am more than OK with that. ISU can do the marketing off the football field and the Hawkeyes can market themselves by line up 11 hard nose MF's and market our program for 4 quarters

iIMHO now is not the time to run our mouth; by either a SID or a marketeer. We also don't know what "promo/sales/stats & %s" are beginning sent to the people & groups that matter.

For example, I will never believe the likes of an ESPN could give a rip and frankly would probably wind up being snarky & using the press releases & glossy brochures against us.

Why can't he? That's exactly what the White House press secretary does and all the press and media run it unequivocally and without challenge. And that is a fact that can easily be supported!

Wrong. I did my undergraduate internship with the Dolphins. The beat guys were desperate for stories. How many times can a guy write/talk about the need to limit turnovers while maintaining the edge in order to limit the big play? Most media are too lazy to go look for their own stories. They lap that sh!t up. Spoon feed them what YOU want them to know. Part of my responsibilities were to write this sort of thing for those covering the game. I would give my friends a list of game notes provided and they would drink every time one was used during the broadcast.

Okie st is in the same position as us and no one is talking about them. Russilo on espn and kanell have mentioned iowa daily Pitt who's only loss is iowa gets no love. Miss st and ole miss were the media darlings last year until they were beat. Even if we go 12-0 they will give ohio st and mich more attention. Blue blood bias if Nebraska was 7-0 they'd be all over their dick

Then you had a bunch of really lazy guys. Most media people I know aren't like that nor do they need to be force-fed stories (especially regional or national guys like you talk about).

And the reason you provide game notes is so they can be read during the broadcast. That's the point of sending them out so not sure what you're getting at there.

How many teams similar to Iowa have campaigned for the Heismann for their player or for more publicity based on a rankings or potential playoff/BCS bid only to lose. Then they looked stupid for self promoting and become an after thought instantly.

How about just enjoying the ride as long as it lasts? If we continue to win, attention will come. It's really that simple. No need for show boating especially with games remaining to play on the field!

Keep winning games = self promotion. Also win out and no need to worry about marketing.

The main reason that the university plays football in present day college sports is to use it for publicity. That means that when the team is doing as well as it is right now, the SID should be doing everything in his power to promote it to the media et al. This 'let it all work out' is a load of crap - that's going to happen anyway. This is an opportunity that the university should be capitalizing on
