The White Sox announced Monday that they have signed veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins on a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training.
Rollins, 37, is a 16-year major-league veteran who was the 2007 National League Most Valuable Player, a three-time All-Star and a four-time Gold Glove Winner. He played 144 games with the Dodgers in 2015, hitting .224 with 24 doubles, 13 home runs, 41 RBIs and a .643 OPS.
Rollins, who played 15 seasons with the Phillies, has a career .265 average and .745 OPS.
“We envision Jimmy contributing both on and off the field,” general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. “He provides us with another quality infield option with the potential to play a variety of roles, as well as another significant positive presence inside our clubhouse.”
Rollins is among baseball’s active leaders with 114 career triples (third), 1,396 runs scored and 465 stolen bases (fourth).
The Sox declined a $10 million option on shortstop Alexei Ramirez in the offseason, and he joined the Padres. They were testing out infielder Tyler Saladino at the position this spring after he played in 68 games in his first major-league season with the Sox last year. He showed solid defense but was inconsistent at the plate, hitting .225 with six doubles, four triples and four home runs.
Top prospect Tim Anderson, a shortstop who played at Double-A Birmingham last year, is also in major-league spring training, but the Sox don’t want to rush his development. He could start the year at Triple-A Charlotte.
