Iowa has lost the mojo, the karma, so how much has leadership played in the drop in success as a Big Ten program?

Watching Ohio State coach Urban Meyer discuss his two quarterbacks ...

Is C.J. Beathard a Leader?

Both James Vandenberg and Jake Rudock fell short as quarterbacks in various areas. They certainly represented the university well as Student-Athletes. Not all Iowa QBs find success.

Chuck Hartlieb was an outstanding QB at Iowa. He didn't always lead Iowa to victory, but he was a part of Iowa's success, during the Hayden Fry era.

Hayden Fry didn't succeed at everything either at Iowa. He is a legend, but 0-3 in Rose Bowls and the 1995 and 1996 seasons witnessed the change from a weak Northwestern to a Northwestern that won the Big Ten.

Kirk Ferentz in 2000, with a 3-9 team, actually spoiled Northwestern's quest for another Big Ten title. It was Purdue, fueled by Iowa's upset at Kinnick over Northwestern.

Of course, Pat Fitzgerald, the coach, came up and bit Iowa in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Iowa has found a way to win in that series, but Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin all have Iowa's number of late.

So, who are the leaders in 2015 for the Iowa Hawkeyes?

Bob Commings found a way to get his 1977 Iowa Hawkeyes to beat Iowa State at Kinnick. However, Iowa hasn't always faired with in the Cy-Hawk series under Commings, Fry or Ferentz. During the 15 year streak, Iowa State and many Iowa opponents were just not very good.

The landscape today has changed. Programs like North Dakota State and UNI are beating programs like Kansas State, Iowa State and Minnesota. They likely give programs like Wisconsin and Iowa scares.

Iowa opens 2015 with Illinois State. A program that right now likely thinks they are the #1 FCS program, with the fall of North Dakota State yesterday. Does Iowa have the leadership to lead the Hawkeyes back on the road of success?

The University of Iowa football program has 16 players on its 2015 Leadership Group, including 13 seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore. The purpose of the group is to assist in formulating policies, and being involved in team decision-making matters regarding the upcoming season. Players are selected by a team vote. The seniors are OL Austin Blythe, RB Jordan Canzeri, DL Darian Cooper, FB Adam Cox, TE Jake Duzey, WR Jacob Hillyer, PK Marshall Koehn, DB Jordan Lomax, DE Nate Meier, DE Drew Ott, LB Travis Perry, FB Macon Plewa and WR Tevaun Smith. The junior class is represented by QB C.J. Beathard and RB LeShun Daniels, Jr., and LB Josey Jewell represents the sophomore class.

Kirk Ferentz tweaked the group. It is more senior oriented, as only two juniors and one sophomore are on the list, as opposed to last years group that had an additional junior and sophomore on the list.

Is C.J. Beathard a quarterback that has the leadership skills needed to elevate the play around him?

Clearly, leadership in 2012, 2014 and other seasons, came up short. Here's to better dividends and returns in 2015 ...

There are a lot of unknowns, but I feel better for a 9+ win season this year, than last. Last season, Iowa's favorable schedule didn't translate well, with new special team units, the loss of 3 outstanding LBs and a roster by season's end that appeared divided ...
