This has been discussed but I don't remember: he was runner-up in PA 3 times until he finally won a state championship. Who beat him out SO and JR years?

Wow, I didn't know Kemmerer was 1x state champ...even though those are certainly some strong opponents that beat him. I would not be surprised to see him win more NCAA titles than state titles.

Has that ever happened before?

Lots of times. A few notable ones

Kyle Dake 2x State Champ, 4x NCAA champ
Eric Voelker 0x State Champ, 2x NCAA champ
Tim Hartung 0x State Champ, 2x NCAA champ
John W Smith 2x State Champ, 3x NCAA champ
Keith Gavin 0x State Champ, 1x NCAA champ

Thought we were just talking Iowa guys...also add in Burroughs. Smith only won two NCAA titles. Also, Ed and Lou Banach outperformed their state titles as well.

Wow, I am particularly impressed with the guys that had 0 state titles and then multiple nattys. Was it injuries or other factors that led to Voelker and Hartung not getting a state title.

It just seems so far out to me that one could rise to the top of D1 wrestling and not snag at least one state HS title beforehand. Hats off to those guys. Dan Dennis was a few seconds from joining that small group, that I knew, but I didn't know about these other guys. Impressive.

Ed Ruth qualifies for that list I believe. I don't think he ever won a state title. But he did win a Prep National Title for Blair his SR year, IIRC.

Does either of these men have kids that wresstle?

Pat Smith won 3 State Titles, but became the first 4 time NCAA Champ.

There is a pretty decent list of guys who won NCAAs but never won a state championship. Chuck Yagla won 2 NCAA titles after never winning state, for instance.

Nate Carr won one state title in high school and then 3 NCAA titles.
Ed Hammer never won a state title but won NCAAs once for Lehigh.

Kemerer is a RFrosh and Nolf is a RSoph. If both stay at 157 Kemerer might be a 4 time finalist with one championship.

Yeah, Ed was a year behind Quentin Wright and lost his soph and junior year to Quentin. Both times in the semi-finals I believe.

I don't believe Dave Dean ever won a state championship in high school. I watched him lose to Jordan Thomas his senior year on a last second takedown.

Its Kemerer with one m. Some of you surprise me by using two m's all the time. Don't be to upset with me. ;)

I remember some people on here questioning how elite a kid could be that hadn't won a state title.

I don't think Stephen Neal ever won state in CA. He beat Lesner to win an ncaa title. That match also prevented Minny from winning the team title, so Iowa won. :)

Neal probably has another couple of achievements that would be hard to match. He won World gold FS, and later a Superbowl ring, playing for New England (and he never played college FB).
