Just out of curiosity, where did this “Purdue is our most hated rival” thing come from with some of you? My family’s from Iowa (I was born there, we moved to Indiana when I was 3), and when I asked my dad, a lifelong Hawkeye fan, about it, he looked confused and said, “No, Iowa St is our biggest rival.”
Nevermind, I Must have skipped over the reason from earlier in thread.

It's in jest, it began after the Legends/Leaders split when the Big Ten tried to make the Boilers our protected rivalry. Granted, the 2000's gave us some pretty good games in the series, but it was definitely forced.

Lmao that’s awesome... you guys are my favorite fan base of the 13 big schools ... along with the three guys who root for Rutgers
Whoa, they’re up to three now?! What other fan base can claim a 50% increase in size over just a 5-year span?!

Oh, and I was starting to think you fellas from out East must have been born yesterday. For as far back as I can remember, I’ve hated Purdue with every ounce of my being these past 8 years...:p

Jeez. Never thought of it that way but you’re right.

Just because somebody hates Neb doesn’t mean that the hate people with a disability in real life though. ;)
I wouldn’t sweat it, RMH. I mean just the other day I saw a group of about five disabled people making fun of Scott Flop outside a Dairy Queen here in Omaha. So I doubt they would ever associate themselves with that level of failure or take offense to folks taking shots at the Nebber program. I think you should be safe...

It’s a joke. When the B1G split into Legends /Leaders Delaney kept one cross division “rivalry” that would be played every year. He choose iowa’s “Rivalry game” to be Purdue making both fan bases pretty much scratch their head. We were never really “rivals”.

Also I’ll say this... you guys aren’t the arrogant lunch boxes wisky fans are and yet like wisky, we respect the way you all go about your business.

You look at Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern, Nebraska and Minnesota, none of these schools dominate recruiting hotbeds. So success is just harder. And yet for my money the only fans of the bunch who act like suckeye fans are Wisconsin and Nebraska ... and Nebraska hasn’t been as good as Ohio $$$$ University since I was in junior high beating it to Paula Abdul

I have no beef with Purdue at all. In fact, Painter is my favorite Big Ten basketball coach.

I voted for Nebraska over the other choices only because of their fans. Nothing to do with the dudes who actually play football.

I don’t hate the Nebraska football players much anymore. I didn’t like them when they were a bunch of idiots who couldn’t get in anywhere else, when they were shooting at people, throwing girls down stairs, etc. and nothing really came of it. Tom Osborne was also a real POS for covering it up, not caring, and getting upset when they forced academic standards when they joined the Big 12. Their fans on the other hand are still unbearable and delusional idiots.

I’d say the Ped State players are the worst, but that’s probably a lot to do with the culture their coach brings in.

Old enough to remember Jerry, et al. Snook, Niland, Noonan. Remeber all the 56-3 beatings we took from Ohio State and Michigan. I have nursed an abiding hatred of those two institutions for somewhere around 53 years. All the others are wannabe that come and go, Ohio State and Michigan are always the real enemy.

Wisconsin by leaps and bounds. Why in the world people pick Nebraska I will never know. Nebraska is irrelevant, Wisconsin is our rival, pay attention.

Now that's a beautful expression: Nebraska and irrelevant..in the same sentence! That is glorious.
We pick Nebraska again for their fan arrogance and sense of entitlement and because they refuse to believe they are on the same level as anyone else these days.
(For the record i hate Wisky too)

I do not disagree with your statement about their fan arrogance and sense of entitlement.

Easily Nebby, mostly because of their arrogant, insufferable fan base.
It always strikes me as hilariously hypocritical when an Iowaah fan accuses any fan base of being arrogant. I've actually been told, "you live in Iowa, you should root for Iowa...". THAT'S an arrogant fan base!

How come Iowa message board fans weren't an option? Just kidding. I don't hate anyone, especially people I've never met.

One of my good friend out here is best buds with Matt Painter. He just flew back for his wedding a few weeks ago & said that Fran McCaffrey was there. He spoke with Fran for a long time.

Fran was the only other B1G coach there. I didn’t know he & Painter were so close.

Nebber’s 1 more bad season from having to drop Cornhuskers in place of Irrelevants.

I want to beat WI more than anyone, but I don't hate them. They are blue collar and are good people. I know a ton of Michigan fans, and they are an entitled and arrogant bunch about their team. Add in Harbaugh and it puts me over the top!

Iowa and Purdue were literally the last two schools left when they were deciding the Legends and Leaders rivalries.

1. Michigan and OSU, obviously
2. Minnesota and Wisc, they talk funny and play for an ax, one of the longest running series
3. Nebraska and PSU, the new kids on the block, make up for 1994
4. NW and ILL, battle for Chicago
5. MSU and Indiana, basketball rivals so why not football too

Who we got left?

Iowa and Purdue

Sounds good, lets call it a day.

Curious to see what other hawk fans think.
It was Michigan state for a few years for me, but now it is 100% badgers
I think I have rooted and will root for each of those teams at any given time, depending on the foe.

However, I don't think I will ever root for Penn State. They are officially the bad guys to me, and they will be for a long time.

This is simple. I don't like any B14 team when they play us, but Debby Nerfbraska the cornhole queen is the only team I actively root against out of conference. Even ISU I cheer for after we beat them. Before the interwebz my family (in Iowa City) would watch both teams. We had no reason to hate because there were no trolls and we'd cheer for Iowa kids at any school.

As someone above said, Iowa-Purdue was the protected game for each school when they were leaders/legends divisions. Fans, including the fansite Black Heart Gold Pants, started referring to Purdue as "Our Most Hated Rival" (OMHR Purdue) in jest, and it has stuck around.

A long answer to a short question. Mike had a tough game at Minnersota and we ultimately lost. Feeling down as we left the stadium, an 80 year old man says "go home you bunch of f-ing losers!! That about sent me over the top. That didn't go over too well. But I kept walking. Next, a cheerleader did basically the same thing. I told her, I can see being a poor loser but why do you need to act this way when you win. You're a nice representative of your institution of higher education. Then she couldn't apologize enough. Thus, I hate losing to Minnesota.

Nebraska is a close second because their fans are so out of touch with reality. Actually, if you go to a game there, their fans are actually pretty nice that attend the games.

Wisconsin is next. Living in Dubuque, it is tough losing to the Badgers!!

I believe that the joke at the time was that Purdue and Iowa should play for a set of Tupperware because they were the 'leftover' rivals.

When the B1G expanded each team was given a rivalry game. Ohio State got Mich, Wisconsin got Minnesota....and in the end there were two teams left Iowa and Purdue.
Thus, the B1G gave us our most hated rival — Purdue.

Just remember - We’re the Real Black and Gold!

Hate? Kids playing a game, really?
you can hate a program without hating the kids can't you?
then again, I'd don't understand why the hell out of state kids, with no connection, would want to go to some of these sorry ass programs(msu/psu/etc.....YUCK)
