You realize they say the same damn thing for every party out of power until Trump took over the GOP and made them all his servants.
The party out of power doesn't really have a "leader" until there is a clear nominee for president.

The answer to the question is Obama and that was the problem during the last election. He is still the face of the franchise.
Obama would still be a popular candidate but he can't run anymore and is effectively retired. All he can do is go around and try to campaign for other people.
He's not the leader of the party. He can't put forward a vision because he can't be president again. The president or a presidential nominee is the de facto leader of a party because only they can put forward a vision for the whole group to run on.
It is absolutely normal for the party out of the white house to be leaderless. This always happens when the party is not a cult.
Republican party is a cult and will always be led by Trump until he dies. Then I don't know Don Jr. might take charge but I'm not sure if he has the personality to do it. He may be the Richard Cromwell to Donald's Oliver but all of them only a half a percent as smart as the Cromwells.
