Don’t remember the year but it became a thing after Michigan TE (Hake Butt) tore up his knee in Bowl Game. He was projected high round (maybe 1st round). His draft stock went to nothing and he never really panned out. Didn’t get paid.

I think it was started when when half of the eligible teams make bowl games with no real meaning and there is millions at stake in NFL and NIL. But that's just a guess.

Headline: Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette are skipping bowl games. Will this become a trend?

This was from 2016. Nowadays we pretty much assume the draft ready players will be outing out, and we're surprised when they don't.

Christian McCaffrey is generally considered to be the trendsetter after sitting out Stanford’s bowl game after the ‘16 season (too bad he didn’t do it a year earlier….).
Yeah I don't think he was THE first, but he is considered the one that really opened the door for others to say, "if he can do it, so can I".

Trash.
