Who will we lose to the portal?

The college football portal opens a week from tomorrow. While there has been some discussion of what we need, I haven’t see as much talk about who we will lose. If history has taught us anything, it’s that we will have some players existing the program. But who?

At a quick glance, I would not at all be surprised to see Lainez leave, along with Cade (assuming he can talk the NCAA into giving him another year). I also wouldn’t be surprised to see a RB or two enter the portal, although I thought the same thing last year and it never happened. I also think our WR room is still a work in progress, and I would not be surprised to see a couple guys look for a better fit somewhere else.

And we can probably expect to see at least one or two unexpected departures … potentially guys making “business decisions” as such.

Any other ideas?

Do rosters need to be cut to 104 by next season? If that is the case, I see it being really dangerous for many kids to leave a program on their own will for another school if they have a scholly as I would think the number of players cut or available in the portal this year would be quite large.

Yup. A LOT of guys transferring are going to end up FCS/D2/NAIA

Also some schools have big time roster problems and will be forced to run some kids off.

It’s a result of the rules.

Iowa State I think had 103 players play at least a snap. They have 16 seniors. There are going to be guys gone that likely played this year.

What’s the numbers rule now? I haven’t been paying attention to that. Were teams allowed up to 104? Now they have to go back to 85 next year?

KJ will be gone so Jas and Moulton will be fighting for RB1 and each getting a lot of carries so not sure why they would leave

I don't think we have experienced guys that could leave for more money. Not sure who they would be.

It didn’t seem like we featured TEs in the passing game as much this year. Perhaps that’s because we had KJ and didn’t have a QB who could throw accurately. Do we lose any TEs?

We will pick up better players from the portal than we lose. One man's trash is another man's treasure!

Once Cade was out, there was no reason not to utilize the TEs. None. Yet Iowa failed to do anything with the TEs. It's a mystery to me.

Yeah we never really went their way after the last few years only throwing to them.

The other stat id like to see is how many PA passes did Iowa attempt this year.

I know the OL couldn’t pass pro for more than 2 seconds, but with the entire defense selling out on the run, you’d think a PA would work often

Even if Cade gets another year granted, I'm pretty sure he has no option but to leave. Kirk gave him the grace not to walk on senior night, but I really doubt he'd let him wear the uniform again after that.

No. The current system s 85 scholarships but you can have as many walk ons as you want. Teams like Iowa, Wisc, Neb as example probably have about 35-45 walk ons. Quite a few of these guys play in specials, some even start, and many become future regular players. Starting next year the number is 105 total. All can be on scholarship or not, BUT thats it. No players beyond that number. So Iowa as an example will need to drop about 20 - 25 players from what they've had in the past.

The tbd part is the ability to offer partials. Some kids with 1/2 plus the new $$ pay may still better off at the larger schools.

The 105 limit is the football team. The caps impact other sports and I was reading somewhere that a lot of sports could be in for a cut in players.

my dumbass just posted on this thread without bumping down, that's my bad. I bet Marco, Pascuzzi maybe, I also wonder about a guy like Osgood.

In my opinion, the pickings are pretty slim on who other teams would want from Iowa. Possibly one of the younger running backs but there isn’t a whole lot of tape. I would t be surprised if Kaden Wetjen has been getting messages from boosters at other schools.

Isn't Wetjen done?

So with the 105 limit, i get that part, but can we also have a Practice Squad of like 25 or 30 walk ons that technically are not part of the team, but can help in scrimmages and practice?

Anderson and Washington might see it tougher to find the field with younger guys rising up on the depth charts. LB seems like a logjam too. I'd be worried about Keon but seems like with Castro and Schulte leaving, he's top of the depth chart. I alwasys thought X was more a FS than SS anyway.

Lolol. NO. The walk ons were "the practice squad". Thats all gone after the bowl games.....
