Why America Sucks at Everything

My ex is from Denmark. She was here for school, before she went to free med-school after Italy. She had been through all European counties. She told me this country is doomed. It is, and if you can’t see that you’re a fool. She said you’re raising alcoholic idiots that are clueless about the real world and education,
But that's a typical Euro.

.was she talking about you and your friends and family? Kidding of course....

Denmark is as white bread as it comes. They are held up as a standard amongst a certain type of person in this country as a place we should emulate. Their people tend to be ranked really high on things like happiness. Is it true? Maybe....but I doubt it.

You should see how they treat immigrants though ...it is a thing to behold. Not in a good way

It always sounds vaguely racist dogwhistle-y. Like, “we could have universal healthcare, but black people…” I’d eagerly listen to a clarification, though.
I hope not, but I've never seen the point explained. Like you said, it's always just a vague reference to a homogeneous population.

It could just as easily be lack of religion that make these particular countries homogeneous, because they just happen to also be some of the least religious countries in the world. I honestly would like to know.

Wouldn't you need multiple ethnic groups to have ethnic strife?

How much ethnic strife do you expect in Iceland?
I'm not denying the existence of ethnic strife.

But I still don't know what the point you're making, even though I was responding to someone else. Is it that ethnic strife is given too much weight in the ranking? That ethnic strife is the difference maker?

So the a quibbling by some here on the British figure renders the entire thing moot? Next you’ll tell me Ronald Mexico is too dumb understand the entire premise.

Right. I am sure that is the only inaccuracy in that video by world renowned economist and historian David Cross.

If they don't have ethnic strife because it's a largely homogeneous society, they're going to score higher. It's as if they're being graded on something they aren't being tested on, and getting an A by default.
Does that make sense?

It has always made sense and I've never denied it, I'm just asking what is the point of bringing it up? How does a logically lower level of ethnic tension play into the overall theme of the thread? I would assume that America has a built in advantage on a category or two when compared with other countries.

“By?”

Watching literally 2 seconds of it would tell you it comes from the Gravel Institute, and that the person talking could be anyone. Is shooting the messenger and ignoring the argument a thing an intelligent thoughtful person does, or a thing a lazy person looking for fights on the internet does?

They're trying to figure out what to do with their immigrant ghettos:

link1
link2

They could literally be talking about America’s political parties. But yeah, that’s not great. From your first link:

“Denmark has swung sharply rightwards in recent years. Inhabitants of areas like Mjølnerparken, particularly Muslim residents, have been repeated targets of media and political panic over “Islamisation”. Some rural municipalities with minuscule Muslim populations have made pork compulsory for school canteens, while the far-right Danish People’s party, part of the country’s ruling coalition until June 2019, sought to corral any refugees denied resident permits and who are deemed to be criminals on to a remote island. The immigration minister suggested Muslims should take leave from work during Ramadan “to avoid negative consequences for the rest of Danish society”, and racially or religiously motivated hate crimeshave become more frequent.

The country’s new centre-left coalition, elected in June 2019, has not been much different, continuing to pursue anti-immigrant policies supposedly to reduce far-right support. The new Social Democrat housing minister, Kaare Dybvad, is phasing out use of the stigmatising term “ghetto”, but still pursuing his right-wing predecessors’ policies.

Critics say this is based on false premises and demonisation. “We have had a Danish minster saying Mjølnerparken doesn’t live under the Danish constitution but sharia law,” says Marie Northroup, a tenants’ activist. ‘This bears no resemblance to the reality on the ground – it’s just whipped up in order to discriminate.”

Derpity doubling down on a derpity dumb point.

Who’s rooting against our Olympic teams? Who wears the “Make America Great Again” hats? Who just tried to overthrow the government? Who obstructs every effort to actually make America better?
The students of south Florida university, a huge Republican strong hold. /s

Pretty sure saying make great AGAIN implies you think its was great and see how great it can become.

A cult representing a tiny percent of the population. Derp on the fall back always being "but Jan 6th"

Politicians. Politicians obstruct on both sides of the fence.

It's cool flick, go back to pissing and moaning about all the shit that is wrong while attempting the guise of being the group who love it for another 2-3 pages. No one see's the hypocrisy, it's cool.

Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerp.

Do you agree with the idea of trying to integrate the immigrant ghettos by dispersing them from insular concentrations with high welfare dependency and crime?

I thought the U.S. had already started trying to move away from creating 'project housing' as well.

You are right, I shouldn’t have brought Cross into it. It took someone 5 minutes and 1 google search to debunk content presented in the first 30 seconds of the presentation. Only an idiot would view that video as anything other than misleading propaganda. I should have given the world renowned think tank “The Gravel Institute” the credit for it.

But it sure found it’s mark with you and Menace. You two sure do choose some weird hills to die on.

Someone who actually thought it was “by” David Cross has a lot of balls calling anyone else an “idiot”. 😂

Links to pics or video of “how they treat immigrants?”
Try traveling. This schtick of asking for a link is fairly weak. I have loved in Europe and know exactly what I am talking about as does anyone else that has loved in Europe. Bit since I presume you are a democrat and will whine until something is provided here you go. Took about ten seconds to find and is from CNN.

Cuz Dems hate America.

No they don't. They have a much different view or perspective on what they think America is and should be and follow their own myth building around our country. Replace Dems with republicans and it is equally valid.
I dont think any group of roughly 100 million people can be categorized with such a broad statement but I can't wipe my ass around here without reading how Republicans hate the US and democracy. Here we have a funny bitch fest of how this group of dems is crying about hating the US so.......

How does a thread on the financial health for most Americans turn into rants about immigration that devolves into rationalizations of other countries whose typical citizen has better financial health and better services that can be explained due to their populations being ‘homogenous?’

Both of those root cause analyses are racist

Let me put it in a way that you can understand. Gated communities with strong HOAs tend to look prettier than the average neighborhood.

I have traveled. I do travel. And while it isn’t awesome what they’re kicking around in Denmark - to appease the right wingers there, of course; let me know when they get an equivalent of Steven Miller with the ear of their head of state - it’s not like we’re the gold standard for welcoming the stranger, either.

Not that the original video was even about that anyway, which of course you know because you don’t want to argue those points, which absolutely haven’t been debunked, no matter what Ronny Mexico wants us to believe.

(And I too have “loved” in Europe. Mostly missionary in Paris and Munich, but some doggy and 69 in Prague - had lots to drink there one night.)

I honestly don’t understand how anyone could tolerate DavId Cross for more than 18 seconds. And it has zero to do with politics. He made Arrested Development unwatchable for me. I do t know what it is. I even tried his skit show with Odenkirk. Bad. I’m sure I’m in the minority but still. Ouch.

The old Mr. Show on HBO, or the revived version on Netflix? Either way, I feel sorry for you. So many great skits, but the “Know Your Rights” guy vs the police skit from the Netflix season was one of the best skits anywhere ever.

I think claiming what the Dems what is an open borders policy is much like the socialists comments from the right. They are statements they make without thought because they are too simple minded to understand semi-complex ideas.

Saying a wall won't work and we shouldn't separate children of illegal immigrants from their parents isn't advocating open borders.

Much in the same way that government run healthcare is not socialism.

That said to be entirely fair the Democrats do a similar thing with abortion, thinking that if we don't have legal abortion we are turning women into property.

For what it's worth ... criminalizing abortions (specifically, religion's attempts to regulate all aspects of reproductive activity) is very much a core aspect of the maintenance of women as subjugates of men.

That's not in the same ballpark as the right calling universal heallthcare 'socialism'.

David Cross said it in the video you posted. I'm talking about him.

Do you think when the government directs over half the spending and sets many of the prices that is a 'free market'?
You really think we have a “free market”? JFC, such simple-minded childish feel-goodz.

I agree, the opinion expressed in the video that America enjoys a free market healthcare system is completely ignorant.

Say, you never did tell me what you thought Bernie meant when he bitched about all the deodorant and shoe options consumers have in the context of child hunger.
I provided the context you requested, but you never gave me your opinion on what Bernie meant by that comment.

Ready to give it a shot?

I didn’t because you failed to provide the context. As promised, I will once you come through.

Au contraire mon frère!

I provided the context to both Bernie's declaration that he's a socialist (see this post) and the interview in which he expressed the opinion (see this post) that consumers have too many deodorant and shoe choices in light of child hunger.

Were you seeking another 'context'? Or can you finally bring yourself to share your opinion?

That is also ridiculous.

Getting rid of abortions does not take away the woman's franchise nor does it prevent her from making choices in terms of career, marriage, sexual relations, freedom of movement and pretty much anything else in life.

It only limits her choices after pregnancy has already occurred. It also limits the father's choices as well.

I agree with the gist of this video which is sort of unexpected after reading the title. It's basically saying Americans spend more, in terms of taxes and so on, for less than any other country (especially when you include health care costs).

The problem imo is the government wastes a tremendous amount of money and is very inefficient. Things like lobbying, honest graft, political favors, special programs and so forth, that shouldn't be allowed at all, make it so congress's interests, having too much motivation for their own personal profit, don't align with the people well enough. Need to get rid of all of it.

There's also a myth that any spending is good. Not that all spending is bad, don't conflate that, but there is way too much wasteful spending. For the amount we already spend including health costs, all taxes federal, state and local (or close, I'm guessing here, need to look at everything as a % of GDP including health costs) we could afford the infrastructure, health care, safety nets and so on, comparable to Europe or Canada. We already spend twice as much as most countries on health care in terms of GDP (about 18% US vs about 9% in Europe), so that's a big one.

Also, one more point, imo the interest of a congress person needs to be aligned with the benefit of the people, not just the opinion of the people (in relation to personal and party financial gain, special interests and so forth). Hopefully, removing large financial interests will end up attracting more honest, smart, less-money motivated people to the top of the hierarchy. Their pension and health benefits are outstanding already. Just need to get rid of all the financial crap, political favors, stuff like that.
