I believe it's because he's a Republican. An African American republican at that. If Ben Carson won, the D's would have to completely revamp their strategy. The R's would be proven NOT racist, and the African American vote would be shown anything but a lock for the D's. Add to that, he's a Christian, and he's very easy for D's to hate, as long as it's not for the color of his skin.

He isn't going to win though. His debate performances have been pretty weak too. He's clearly level headed and of excellent character, but he just doesn't seize the moment very well on stage.

The main emphasis with the early field of candidates was a direct attempt to appeal to ALL groups of potential voters. Same reason Fiorina was encouraged to run. Unfortunately it actually exposed the GOP as frauds and their intentions were realized pretty early in the process.

The results obviously backfired on Priebus and ended up showing vulnerability as it diluted the field, which ultimately helped Trump.

The GOP made this bed... now they have to sleep in it.

Carson made it clear he was more concerned about selling books than running a campaign when he surged to the top of the polls briefly. He'd go days without a campaign event, but he'd have a book signing every day. This has been a grand plan to increase the brand recognition of the Carson name. He should be excluded from the next debate.
