Why Does Fran Get a Pass?

Because of the general Iowa fan expectations, or lack thereof.

Hawks earned a spate of NCAA invites recently, even despite no success whatsoever when they got there, so that makes Fran a really good coach.

Just like football. DFL offense for 2+ years running, but because they won 10 games against a marshmallow-soft schedule this season and go to a bowl game 99% of the time, Kirk is as great an all-around coach as he ever was.

He not only got a pass, but he got multiple unwarranted contracts from the incompetent former AD. Now with that doofus finally gone there's at least a chance for some accountability as to performance that matters. Specifically, setting the bar a little higher than just making the NCAA tourney most years before quickly crapping out.

I get your overall point but Iowa basketball is far worse than Iowa football and it’s not really even close

His job to be quite honest. I just don't see any fire in the guy. I guess that happens in any job but still sad to see as a fan.
He’s been here longer than Tom Davis now. Iowa is a weird fan base in that they’re very fickle but petrified of change.

At this point, Iowa fans might have greater Fran fatigue than Brian Ferentz fatigue. To me, regardless of perceived talent levels, Iowa is almost always outmatched in every game physically and athletically. Giving up 55 points in the second half to this Michigan team is next-level pathetic. And yet, this script gets played out every year under Fran.

Nothing changes under Fran in the areas that matter: defense, toughness, and athleticism. Might as well make a change after this season. Bye Fran.

LIckliter had a bunch of Posters that said it would Kill the Iowa program let a guy go after only 3 years. It is hard to build a consensus.

Fran has a moderately successful track record. A bunch of Fran Fans think Connor McCaffery deserved to start over Keegan Murray, PMAC deserved to start over Kris Murray, product is entertaining because they play fast, and getting invited to NCAA tourney is more important than doing anything in NCAA, and things could get worse if a new coach were hired.

Fran won't be fired, so it comes down to whether he leaves on his own.

Only because football has Phil Parker, CDJ and Tory Taylor.
Which is just to say that everything is good except the offense, and they’re hopefully changing that this off-season. What attempt has been made to fix anything about MBB at any time over the last ten years?

Because he’s not Lickliter and too many Iowa fans are totally fine with being mediocre as long we don’t go back to that. You will also hear the Tom Davis argument. Better to stick with stale out of fear it could be worse 🙄

I fall into this category. I admit it 100%. I was so happy to have this thing turned around and we have been "good" the last few years. I feel like he finds good players that are over looked.

I've been critical of Fran for the techs, the rotations, the lack of defense, lack of toughness, etc.

I realize we have had some unbelievable players come through the program. That credit has to go to Fran. Those players, however, covered up a ton of deficiencies. Those deficiencies are so much more obvious when we don't have a player to pull us out of the fire.

The antics from Fran are way more than tiresome at this point. When you aren't winning, it's even worse.

He's had underperforming shit teams for years.

I think Fran wants out of IC and will leave after this year. It's pretty telling the family is over Iowa City when the youngest has announced he won't be going to Iowa. I get a strong sense they are done with Iowa.

You have to be smart about how/when you fire a coach. In 20-21 we fished the regular season in the top 10 and were a 2 seed, the following year we win the B1G conference championship; last year was certainly not outstanding, but it was his 5th straight tournament; you don't move on from a coach at Iowa after seasons like that.

That said, it's time for Iowa and the McCaffrey family to shake hands and part ways, it's in the best interest of both parties.

People focus on the lack of a post season run, which is fair, but his inability to pull in a top pg to run his style of play was his biggest failure imo.

Appreciate him getting us out of the mire, but the time has come to move on.

All of this is very fair and level headed. It’s hard for me to be that way when I watch that garbage. I hope you are correct and Fran shakes hands and moves on.

We have had two coaches since Dr. Tom prior to Fran and they've both been awful in different ways.

Fran has been above average but he needs to win games like today and have more success in March or he should be gone. Today's loss was unacceptable.

Same time period for me.

After that Garza season losing to Oregon, I was done with him.
I think the next season losing in the first round to some shit mid major was even worse.

It's one thing to let Ferentz keep chugging along forever when he had all the donors in his pocket but to keep going with Fran at this point isn't making anyone happy.

I can't argue with this. While I'd personally give him 2 more years to build a team around the freshman and sophomores, if he were to be fired, I wouldn't be bewildered.

With Patrick graduating and the Jack car accident resulting in a fatality, I would not be surprised to see the McCaffrey's look to make a fresh start elsewhere after this year.

The fact that Kirk says he does an evaluation at end of every year and then keeps this offense means there is no evaluation

Regarding the OP, what exactly do you mean? Is it in comparison to how hard people are on KF and not as much for Fran?

If that's the case, the simple/obvious answer is apathy. Only a fraction of Iowa fans care about basketball any longer. The ones that do care, are typically growing more apathetic with Fran each season.

I think a higher consensus of fans that do watch their respective sports, are harder on Fran than Kirk. Just my thoughts.
