Why don't the Democrats want people to watch their debates?

If a presidential debate is held and nobody watches, does it really happen?

While viewers are expected to watch the third Democratic debate on Saturday night, they are unlikely to be doing so in the droves that tuned into the Republican debates or the Democratic face-off that was held on a weeknight. While some of that interest on the Republican side can be attributed to the Donald J. Trump effect, critics of the Democratic National Committee’s scheduling process are also upset that the party is muting its message by holding debates when people are less likely to tune in.

There was much discussion over the number of Democratic debates that would be held in this cycle, with Martin O’Malley and Senator Bernie Sanders pushing for more opportunities to face off publicly with Hillary Clinton. They ultimately settled on six, of which two were scheduled for Saturday evenings and one for a Sunday.

As in the previous Democratic debate, which was held at the same time as an important college football game, the candidates will clash on Saturday night with the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys.

Mr. O’Malley, who has been the most vocal about the timing of the debates, complained about the issue in August.

“They’ve scheduled it during shopping season, December 19th,” Mr. O’Malley said. “I don’t know why that is. I think it’s out of a false sense that they have to circle the wagons around the inevitable front-runner.”

A spokeswoman for Mr. O’Malley’s campaign said that avoiding prime-time debate slots was a way for the Democratic Party to “protect” Mrs. Clinton, and that it had given Mr. Trump and the Republicans a better platform to express their views.

Mr. Sanders’s campaign said that he did not have any input about when the debates would take place and that he was hoping for more opportunities to discuss the issues with his rivals for the nomination.

“We’re playing the hand we were dealt,” said Michael Briggs, a spokesman for Mr. Sanders. “I guess Christmas Eve was booked.”

The Clinton campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

I hope it's not just a touchy, feely, mutual admiration hug fest like the first one.

I would like to see someone challenge Hill on her cheese-cloth like record before the DNC nomination.

Hill had her coming out party long ago. The Dem's debate is superfluous. But I will say this, if it boils down to a 1 on 1 between Hill & the Donald, I'd give you even money Don King has plans to make it a Pay Per View event.

LLLLLLLLLLEEEETTTTTTTSSSSSSSSSSSSS GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!!

"and in June 2007 was named one of Clinton's national campaign co-chairs"

No conflict of interest detected.

Hillary holds the cards and I don't think she would agree to debates with high viewership.

Interesting that the GOP has decided that ratings are more important than running serious candidates. People don't watch the Dems because they aren't a trainwreck like the Republicans. End of thread.

So far, they only debate on Saturday nights when there's a football game on.

Hmmm.... Cowboys vs. Jets? Or an old hag, and old coot, and some other guy?

Decisions, decisions....

I agree. It's an odd choice if you want to get viewers. I know I'm out this Saturday. I've got better things to do.

Right now the GOP is imploding. As long as it goes the way it is the Democrats are guaranteed to win the Presidency, so long as they don't do anything stupid. It's a good strategy to sit back and watch the show.

A Democrat's worst nightmares are a job, the truth and hearing Maury Povitch say, "the results are in and you ARE the father."

I've heard the first two a million times, but what does the third have to do with anything?

No one will watch because everyone believes its the Hillary show. She will be President barring some sort of major gaffe.

Cant we just get to it already.

How can we get her to say "you people" to a mostly African American audience?

Trad...why would you watch them? There is no one there you would ever vote for......He'll, I am a registered Democrat..and I won't watch them! I know what these guys and gals think and what they will do if elected. Out of BOTH parties, there is only one clear and free thinker...and you think he's a socialist.
I would love to cast my ballot for Bernie next November....but I'll probably cast it for Hillary, instead. There is NO one on the other side that is even sane.

You are the perfect example as to why this country is f***ed up.

Congrats?

Make sure you share that info with all your friends Nole...you 'know" the reason this country is screwed...because of me. I'm glad things are so simple in your neck of the woods.

Share it with who? The 95% of people who agree with you? That exactly why the income gap keeps widening, even though you people SCREAM about it, and the wars keep on.

I wont vote for Hillary. I would vote for Sanders if for no other reason than the fact that he has integrity. Hillary is owned by Citibank, Goldman Sachs, etc. The Republicans are too except for Trump.

I am going to investigate the 3rd party people and when I can find a centrist one I will cast a vote in good conscience.

So, did anyone watch? Too late for me... after watching BYU claw their way back from 35-0 and nearly pull it off, I was done for the day.

because the 2016 Democratic race is a farce.

Hillary Clinton was coronated long ago as the DNC candidate for 2016 President.

The debates create the illusion of competition within the party in order to not piss off portions of the base that did not want her to be the nominee.

Lemmings will support the Ordained One anyways.

Ya like the word lemmings. Don't ya little guy.

As was stated previously... no one thinks anyone but HRC gets the nod. There is simply no strategic reason to chance a big mistake with the Party. The GOP is imploding with every debate.
The Dems are running a magnificent strategy. This is the same thing as would be done with any activity when you have the lead. The in-fighting within the GOP will cannibalize the survivor. Regardless who gets the GOP nod... one or more segments of the Party will either 1. not vote, 2. mount a 3rd Party run, or 3.work against the nominee because of bitterness.
It has already been proven that all the supposed controversy with the Benghazi thing, the Clinton Foundation, and any other mud the GOP has tried throwing at HRC hasn't had their desired affect. In fact... the Benghazi hearing made HRC even stronger. The GOP might have used all their bullets up with minimal success. Priebus will be out of a job in about 11 months.

The DNC & the Hillary campaign think the Democratic party voting base are total lemming morons and will fall for the charade Democratic race they are putting on for the Party's sake and they are not wrong at all.

Low information voters are easily duped.

2 party system; calling the other side lemmings; being that simple minded.

The irony of that last statement.
