Check out the Sagarin Computer Polls for March 13. That would be the Final Regular season, plus
Tournament ranking of every team in America. After all the games are played, an UNBIASED computer programs ranks IOWA in the Top 20, #19 in America.

Where was ISU ranked ? #23, I believe. Yet, the Clowns get a 4 seed ???

And..........here's another reason why IOWA should be MAD as h**8.
Two of the teams ranked ahead of IOWA, Louisville and SMU were Banned from being in the
NC2A tourney. So, that moves IOWA up even further.

I hope Fran and the team know this and take it to the Tournament.
WAR IOWA HAWKEYE HOOPs.

ISU had 8 top 50 wins and didn't lose to a team that wasn't in the tournament. I thought it was 50/50 if they were going to get a 4 or a 5 but I was leaning towards a 4

Really? Because according to the gospel of Jeff Sagarin, it is Iowa not isu with the eight wins versus top fifty competition.

As an isu fan, is Sagarin correct or not?

Who cares?

If you are one of 36 teams to receive an at-large invitation, you are there based on merit;

Merit assumes you have sufficient talent to win the tournament, or at least compete for a title;

To win a title you have to defeat 6 different opponents, some who supposedly will have more talent, some less. In addition, some teams will play well, some who won't;

To win you likely need to compete against teams with more talent as well as teams with less talent, as well as teams with less talent who are playing well and/or teams with more talent playing poorly, or vice-versa.

The only aspect that a team can control is how well you are prepared, how hard you compete, what kind of effort and attitude you bring to every minute of competition ...whether your opponent is a #2 seed of a #12 seed.

Quite worrying about seeding and focus on beating the opponent that is in front of you. That's all that matters.

I don't use Sagarin for basketball. I pretty much only use KenPom which is my favorite and then RPI. The only reason I use Sagarin for college football is because it's the only site I know of that has SOS.

I don't see how they can be mad. When you end the season like they did they were bound to get knocked down on the seeding. And no one uses sagarin. Big 10 was not seen as as good of league as Pac 12, ACC or Big 12 so that also knocked Iowa down. That being said if they can somehow get back to playing good basketball they could definitely get to a sweet 16. Villanova while really good isn't great and I think they could be picked off.

Let's be real. Iowa's season-long resume is solid, but they have been average to plain awful for the past 8 games. When your team is playing as poorly as Iowa is now, it's a stretch to talk about all the great things you should have coming to you because of what they did 2 months ago. Iowa is not playing like an NCAA Tourney caliber team right now, and they should feel lucky to be there. Wouldn't you like your team matched up in the NCAA Tourney against a team with Iowa's resume for the past month?

Msu should be the mad team. They deserved #1. Maybe those two losses to Iowa were deemed bad losses in the final review

Rankings mean nothing when it comes to seeding or making the tournament.
SMU missed the tournament 2 years ago when they were ranked in the top 25. The rankings are fun to talk about but mean virtually nothing when it comes to seeding

This is spot on.

The Big12 and Pac12 received higher bids than they should have. I still can't believe Oregon got a 1 seed. Purdue/Indiana/Maryland all getting 5 seeds is absurd. Texas AM is a 3 but Kentucky is a 4? Lots of things to question about the bracket.

- We lost 6 of 8
- ISU has more top 50 wins
- ISU has zero bad losses, we have two
- ISU beat Iowa
- Can argue based on ratings that Big 12 is tougher conference

Regarding Oregon talk, I dont really understand the argument. Have most of you watched Oregon more than 1-2 times? Ducks are very talented but also have the numbers....

RPI: #2
SOS: #2 (MSU #66)
vs. RPI Top 50: 12-3 (played only 5 teams higher than RPI 150 too)... MSU was 8-4 and played 9 teams at 150+
Won regular season and PAC-12 Tournament title
Wins over #5 seed Baylor, strong Valpo squad, Alabama (decent) and tournament team Fresno State plus conference wins over a bunch of tournament teams.

I think MSU deserved a one but not over Oregon. For me it was Virginia over Michigan State. Virginia should be a two

If we win at PSU and then proceed to beat Illinois, we wouldn't be a 7 seed, we would probably be a 4 or 5 seed, more likely a 5. Those 2 losses were the ones that hurt our seeding the worst.

Oregon is 9 in KenPom and 16 in BPI.
MSU is 3 in KenPom, 4 in BPI, and 11 in RPI and lost 4 games when Valentine was injured and not 100% which explains the lower RPI. Virginia has even better rankings at 2, 3, and 3.

I do agree, wholeheartedly with Jupiter. Good post

Why are you so mad about seeding if you don't care about seeding?

Why would be mad at seeding, we got the best possible #10 a person could ask for. They probably should have been a 12 seed.

That would be your downfall then. Either Sagarin is valid (during any and all seasons, not just football) or it is not. You get to choose, but be careful because next fall when it fails to meet your cherry picking advantage - it will be easy to remind you how unworthy of a metric it is for you during basketball season.

If there is another site that uses SOS in college football besides Sagarin I will stop using it. I've never heard of anyone using it for basketball.

There are plenty of metrics available and it is a very high probability that many, if not most of them factor in some type of strength of schedule. Just because you are unaware or too lazy to research is nobody's fault but your own.

As for use of metrics, I believe that the NCAA committee uses Sagarin along with RPI and KPI and BPI and LRMC and the two most commonly referred to polls as information sources. Is it your claim here that KenPom is the lone piece of information utilized or that it is considered superior by the NCAA?

Lastly, using purely SOS as a measure to beat all is foolish. There once was an isu poster so enamored with Mr. Sagarin that he mirrored a user name here that closely resembled 'Sagarin'. He used to come here spewing all kinds of nonsense about team comparisons based primarily on SOS until he was shown the error of his ways so often that he finally gave up. Lesson learned and one that you would be wise to note.
