Why is celebrity worship still so prevalent in this country/world?

Everywhere you look and everywhere you go, there is celebrity news, celebrity gossip, celebrity worship, celebrity this, celebrity that.

Why are we so astonished by famous people? Especially ones that aren't even close to at least being role models.

It seems like a sort of sickness to be honest.

This is about my "couples split" thread, isn't it?

Ps. Whatever happened with your little ones teacher? Are you hooking me up with the ex?

No, but it was funny, because I kept seeing that about Affleck and his woman and was about to post this thread in response due to seeing it all over.

The teacher is no longer his,..so I has a sad.

The ex, hey man, anytime you see her, say hi and see what happens.;)

I don't get it either but what really drives me crazy is the obsession with the royal family from Americans. Movie stars, musicians, I can kind of understand but who gives a rat's ass about the people across the pond.

I don't get that either. I've always wondered about that. I mean, they have TV shows that are just a bunch of idiot journalists talking about celebrities and what they are doing at the moment. Countless talk shows, magazines, websites, etc.

It's really bizarre when you think about it.

Look at the worship of professional athletes in America.
We buy the MLB and NFL jersey of our favorite super
star and wear it until it rots. We buy the autographed
pictures, baseballs, footballs and do not blink at the
price. We decorate our man-cave with all types of
expensive memorabilia from sports celebs.

Bottom Line: We live vicariously through our super
stars in America. It makes us feel good and important.

Spot on. Celebrities, athletes, and royalty all represent the same thing. The epitome of the society you live in. And people generally want that epitome to be as great as possible.

FTW!!!

That's why I have never asked a celeb for their autograph. It's a form of worship, besides who gives a rat's butt they know how to write their name. I would never give them a chance to turn me down, folk 'em.

Gotta worship somebody, and it's illegal to worship God in public.

People want the life that they think other people have. Basically the same reason a cow sticks it neck thru the barb wire fence to get to the grass on the other side.

It is the "Rev Ike Syndrome"...you are dirt poor, unimportant and unhappy but give to me and you will experience wealth through watching me enjoy it...

For once I'm in total agreement.

Good point.

Most of these people have incredibly pathetic lives in some small town in the middle of no where and have to look to others for any type of excitement. This is also how some pathetic woman ends up banging a prisoner and then helping them escape. I read an article in the ny times yesterday that had interviews with a bunch of people in upstate new york who were disappointed the escaped prisoners were caught because they had some actual excitement in their lives. These people will be the next ones to line up to bang the next prisoner who gives them the time of day.

Generally speaking regarding "the great unwashed"...

They pine to be something they never will become because far too many feel they can't achieve what our forefathers thought they had enabled for everybody (the American Dream).

We are a rudderless country, lacking in just about any and all effective leadership and moral compass.

Today's America has no idea at all what it wants to be...so the masses take solace in the lives they wish they could have. We have become the Walter Mitty of nations.

I'm glad you lumped together "incredibly pathetic lives" and "small towns" together. I would bet more people per capita live incredibly pathetic lives in larger cities vs smaller ones.

Prove it.

Several years ago i was in charge of putting together a valuation for Wenner media and saw the subscription data for us weekly, i stand by my comment that small towns contribute more to this problem.

Perhaps, but the pathetic souls called celebrities that people worship live in large cities. And they're about as shallow as a kiddie pool.

This reminds me of how it must be to live in Nebraska.

A subscription to us weekly = incredibly pathetic?

Lol. My wife bought one in the airport last week, what's your call on her then?

Not incredibly pathetic because she wouldnt have bought it in the airport if she had a subscription. Ill call this a few steps above incredibly pathetic. Also buying it in an airport implies that you were leaving the small town, good choice.

How long have you hated America? Can you clarify how Americans are stupid or is this just some sort of way for you to really tell us how stupid YOU are?

Thinking, or knowing that generally speaking, the American public is stupid, has almost zero correlation with hating America. In fact, if you can step back and see the wisdom in that, and speak out against it, you probably love the country more than the mouth breathers and knuckle draggers that claim to be so patriotic.

Yes!! Calling out your country for doing things the wrong way, is not only patriotic, but your duty. You can't solve problems if you pretend that they don't exist.

I believe it might be related to a princess syndrome.

If an individual somehow manages to skip most of his education, and accordingly has no background for understanding current events, he gravitates to what he does understand.

For the most part, our news is built around politics, economics, wars, crime, accidents, natural disasters, and gossip.

To understand the first few categories, you need to have been paying attention in life. Many people simply do not; hence the explosion in tabloid circulation, particularly the cable and online versions.

Excellent post, this could also apply to those that talk politics, but don't actually understand how it works. They simply get all of their information from the News and web articles.

Why we know so much about the Kardashians sickens me and many others.

That's a fairly specious analysis. Most people intetionally tune out most of those things because a) there's absolutely nothing at all that they can do about them, and b) they have little to no direct impact on the daily lives of most Americans.
Both of your statements are false. It all depends on how willing you are to go.

Women love the clothes, style, hairdo's and shoes that celebs wear. These celeb women look and act like 'they have it all'. Yet, if you were their therapists or lawyers, you would realized they are even more f*d up than the average person on the street. They just have more money, better clothes and instant access to rehab.

Guys look at the hot celeb women (or dudes if they are gay) and fanaticize about how they would be in the sack. Some women do this too, after they check out the clothes, hairstyles and shoes first.
