Why must fans take it "one game at a time"?

I'm very curious why fans continually admonish other fans to "take it one game at a time". It pops up in every other thread and it doesn't make sense to me. We have fans - very smartly IMO - booking hotels , buying tickets, and making travel arrangements to Indy, the Rose Bowl, etc and like clockwork here comes the mantra - "one game at a time". It feels like we're supposed to use this board to virtually hold hands, worry about losing, and prepare for the worst. It just seems like a strange way to deal with success and I don't get it all. I don't mean this disrespectfully....I just honestly don't get it.
