Why not?

Why not give Ava Heiden a chance to play/defend against Lauren Betts. Ava, at times, has struggled with staying out of foul trouble, other times she has shown the ability to play decent defense. I’m concerned that she will transfer, unless she gets some playing time and experience.

After practicing against our bigs and getting a little playing time I bet she knows she has to get stronger and add some more to her offensive arsenal.
Betts played little as a freshman.

this does concern me a bit. My bigger concern is hannah playing the 5 next year. Playing hannah at the 5 says i'm not worried about the future I'm worried about making current players happy.
Hannah should start next year being able to shoot like AOG from 15 feet in at the 4 spot. That would put her in all american territory and make this team great. If the only way to get her on the floor is to play her at the five and handicap future seasons and the current (next year), then we have a problem.

Explain the current players happy scenario & how you ascertained that view? I know a couple things there but I’d like to see where you are going?

If there is any concern other than winning, better rethink your list.

Players will come, players will go. That is the current era. I'd be shocked if the current freshmen all graduated from Iowa.

Absolutely agree. I though Ava should have been given a chance to show what she could do, especially with Hannah being so erratic. Love Hannah, but Ava should have had some minutes against Betts, absolutely.

If anyone other then Levin leaves, I'd consider that problematic. You can think what you want, but for the most part, at IOWA player retention is important. As Barnes said in football one of his biggest jobs in the portal is KEEPING the players we want to stay. Are you saying we don't want Heiden? We won the last two years under Bluder for two reasons. CC22 obviously, but the other was Monica staying an extra year, and then the next year Kate and Gabby staying. These were all conference players. Them staying meant we got the best out of them the last couple of years. Losing a talent like Heiden, Guyton, or Mallegni would be a really bad look for the program, and set us back a year in player development.

The X factor now is money, While Iowa has a great culture you can never fault a kid if someone offers them a significantly better financial package.

If Jan proves to be the recruiter it’s looking like she might be, we will eventually lose girls. Especially pulling them from all points, east, south, north & west.

That's certainly the team and culture that they have had, and what Jensen "wants," but I think any time it's discussed she seems pretty clear-eyed about how it could shake out. I think players want to play, and that might always be the greater lure than money. With an open portal, unfortunately, that means every player only really commits to schools for a one year "contract." They have that mindset now from a young age. There is no longer the ingrained idea that scholarships are 4-year+ commitments.

If Iowa lands another big player (or two!) that means some very good division one talent they already have could be bench players after playing significant minutes in their first few years. I mean you hope they want to be part of the team no matter what, but if Nebraska calls at that point and says, hey, we want you to start for us, it would be hard to blame them for making the jump.

*Of course I/we want Heiden. She will likely play a big role next season, and depending on the competition with Hays (or someone younger) would likely be on trajectory to be a team star and huge piece of a run in her junior/senior seasons. Her stability with Iowa is much more about that competition next year, and how it shakes out.
