Why such a long lay off for us?

When all the other teams are still getting games in we are off 9 days from the Nebby game. Just wondering why or if this is common. I think we gain some in recovery from injury but lose some momentum they had built playing. Just cant wait to see them play again. I really like this team.

All B1G teams receive two "bye periods" during the conference season.

Yes, but the conference should be smart enough not to bookend the bye with Tuesday/Thursday games...and yes, I realize some of this is dictated by TV, but no other team has anything more than a 7 day layoff (Sat-Sat: Purdue (twice), Maryland, Rutgers, PSU or Sun-Sun: OSU)...Iowa also has a future Wed-Wed break.

Throw in Iowa not getting any Saturday home games (yes, many people can make Sunday afternoon games, but it does become an inconvenience for some if they are traveling more than a couple of hours to get there) and having 4 of 5 weeknight games with 8:00 tips (again, not a big deal for local fans/students, but tough for people traveling and/or with kids)...heck, Iowa doesn't even get two games against anyone from a bordering state (which are normally a bit of a rivalry...and I'd guess also tends to help draw some opposing fans to the games).

I don't think the BIG did Iowa any favors with the schedule (the only positive I see is, based on results to-date, Iowa may see a SOS bump).

What ticks me doff is the end of the season. We play @ OSU on 2/28 and then home against Indiana on 3/1. One whopping day of rest. Indiana coming off four day's rest.

Certainly, NOT worried about Indiana, especially at home.
We could beat them with both hands tied behind MY back.

9 days off sucks in general, but with Clemmons coming off an injury I'm not gonna complain too much.

It's not a 1-day break. The game was listed as either 2/27 or 2/28. It will be played on 2/27, with time still TBD. There are 29 days in February this year. So the OSU game is on Saturday the 27th. With the Indiana game on Tuesday the 1st. It is an advantage for Indiana as they will have had a game on Feb. 25, so 2 extra days of rest for the Hoosiers.

On this site it shows 2/28. Good news though.

B1G scheduling is primarily about revenue and thus TV. Why should it be about anything else ;)?

Yep, and Iowa is compensated for all the inconvenience when that BTN check arrives, and it's the same size as the B10's feature schools (a situation I suspect won't last forever).

Coach McCaffery said last night that he doubted the schedule (MSU& Purdue twice so early and the layoff) was due to anyone at the Big Ten wishing us ill and doubted that it would happen again. I dunno. Seems to me our last three BT schedules were engineered for us to get off to a bad start. Coincidence?

Fran can see some of his sons' games and maybe get in some recruiting. A lot of West's games are usually on the same nights as Iowa plays.

Looks like we finally get to play a game again tomorrow. All but one (Indiana) of the other B1G teams have played at least 2 games since we last played. Almost half of the teams have played 3! Ridiculous schedule

Time off means more for football than it does basketball. Football practices are filled with drills to simulate game situations, but no actual scrimmage takes place for fear of injury. In basketball you can scrimmage during practice, rather than being limited to drills, so a longer layoff won't have as much of an impact.

Every team gets one game during the week and one on the weekend. And a couple times when they get a "bye". When they schedule your week game on a Tuesday and give you a bye on the weekend, it's a long off period.
