Why wait, Joe?

Planet Iowa
Let me be perfectly clear, I want Joe Wieskamp to return to Iowa for his Senior year. In fact, I will go so far as to say I think it would be to his benefit to return. But if he is determined to give the NBA a shot, why not let Coach McCaffery know now so it would clarify for the coaching staff and possible recruits exactly who will be on the team? The draft is on July 29th, but I think players can declare now with no repercussions if they change their minds. And if he has made the decision to return to Iowa, why not announce that and put the fans' minds at ease? Not trying to rush Joe, but if his mind is made up...

Well, since Iowa can't have nice things, Joe will probably go pro early despite next year's team needing him for one more year.

Much like football where we would've gotten over the hump, and maybe even won another Big Ten title with those players who decided beforehand to go pro instead, or at the very worst, made the transition from their departure easier by sticking around an extra year and not throwing someone young and inexperienced and more easily exploitable by our try hard opponents, instead..........................

But we can't have nice things and since nobody wants to f***ing clue the players and coaches into that VERY REAL fact, this stuff continues to happen and people continue asking "why can't Iowa win a championship".

Just sayin.....

Difference is, almost every time that a football player goes pro early, he does so for the correct reasons and leaving early is the right thing. Those guys invariably stick in the league for a while. In Ferentz's tenure, there's only two guys I can think of that left early and didn't get much of an NFL career. Fred Russell never made an active roster, but he also didn't want to come back to college for an additional medical redshirt year, so who can blame him? And Tyler Sash who only played two seasons in the NFL, yet won a Super Bowl as a rookie. Maybe there's someone else, but I don't know who. Yeah it sucks that the team is worse because of all of the great players we've lost early, but those guys need to do what is best for themselves, no best for the school.

In basketball, we've had nobody since Ricky Davis that was a no-brainer to go pro early. Heck, we've only had 4 2nd round draft picks total since 1998 when Ricky left. Cook left and wasn't a draft pick. He's earned some decent coin playing short contracts these last two seasons. He's continued working hard at making it happen and may carve out a career in the NBA like Reggie did as an UDFA.

Joe is not a no-brainer to leave early and he needs to make the decision that Cook made. Stay one more year, be the featured guy, and possibly play your way into a pick if you succeed. Or leave early and have to work your butt off proving yourself in the G-League to try to get some 10 day contracts. Or possibly just go to Europe and give up on the NBA like Aaron White has done.

Also, many players don't have win a national title as their prime objective. Yes they always want to win, but many players just want to make it to the pros to make money. It sucks that we're fans of a team that can't easily replace elite players with elite recruits, but that is the way it is. Wouldn't it be boring to be a fan of UConn women's basketball where you get upset if you don't win the national title?

I hope Weesy stays another year. He could make a big difference for the team. I don't know if it would really improve chances in the NBA, although I think he probably did improve his chances this year. If he could show more of a complete offensive game, by improving his ball handling and ability to drive to the basket, I think his stock would improve.

So if Joe already has his mind made up one way or the other you don't think Fran knows? And if he has made a decision, Joe owes us a press release or Twitter msg because....?

I am guessing Fran is aware of his intent.

So? Is it a secret? If the decision has been made, why not announce it?
I don’t think he has made his decision yet. The disappointing end to season, his status and his fiancée/wife are factors. I am guessing he is talking with Fran and Fran may be putting him in touch with some scouts for more feedback

I doubt it's a secret and it's a big decision that may go to the Draft wire. I think we'll all know if and when it happens (most everything is real time these days), and Fran may have an inkling, but doubt it's more than that. Frankly it's none of our business as "mere" fans IMO.

Joe Weiskamp is one hell of a College Basketball player, of that I am certain. Hope he comes back for that reason alone.

Yeah, I'm sure watching Penn St dominate for a vast majority of the past decade isn't boring at all
That's not what you said. You said it would be boring to get upset if you didn't win a national title every year.

Except with Iowa wrestling, we expect to win the title every year.....and it's not boring at all..............unless you're not a fan of wrestling.

In which case............

Huh? Because he got the NBA evaluation?
Amazing how many people got their panties in a bunch because he did exactly what he should have done - got an evaluation. How many people here did a practicum or worked a part-time job in a field they hoped to be in someday? Did you get an evaluation and told what you needed to do to get better? The "selfish" ones are those who want him to stay only to make their favorite team better. He would be the best player on the roster next year and it would not be close.

Oh, I 100% want him to stay, because he's a great College Basketball player, that plays for the team I root for.

That said, I'm certain he doesn't care what I think. I wish him the best in whatever he does, he is a great kid and the epitome of what an Athlete should act like, IMO. He goes about his business, celebrates with his teammates, but doesn't showboat. The kid is first class all the way.

Definitely. Conducts himself well on the court. Just goes about his business. Much prefer the attitude of not having to showboat and draw attention to oneself. Celebrate with teammates, otherwise I think it's the epitome of cool when a guy does something great and acts like it's not a big deal because that's just him doing what he does.

I have zero issues with Joe getting as many evaluations through as many means as he has available to help him determine his best route to a pro career. He may not be drafted, but he certainly has potential to make money playing professionally somewhere.
If he decides to pursue the pro career now, then thanks for what he's given to the program and best of luck.

New to the internet?

Hardly, I want him to return as much as anybody, but none of us have much say in his decision one way or another and throwing hate on him or on other posters because it might take weeks, months or whenever to get an answer is moronic.
I bet Fran has a good idea what Weezy's thinking is and we'll get an answer sooner then later.
By the way Payton Sanford is a pretty good replacement if Joe decides to call it a day.

He probably doesn't know yet whether he's coming back or not.

I suspect the feedback he gets from professional scouts about his pro prospects will help him decide.

Agreed. Just having fun with the "sniping" comment.
God forbit the kid step back and take a look at things, his life, etc. and decide if going pro is what's best for him. If it were any of us, or our kid, we'd certainly want/do the same thing.

God bless Joe if he feels he's ready for the next level, wish him well and Iowa will move on. As I said, Payton Sanford is waiting in the wings along with Patrick, Keegan or Kris or whomever Fran puts on the floor.
Next man in...
