Good timing in that you bring up Mitch Kelly's name this close to the Iowa vs. Iowa State meet...Does anybody remember the dual back in 1987...Iowa knocked off then #1 ranked ISU 18-15...Iowa would have lost if Mitch Kelly had lost...The fact that Mitch had to lose 25 pounds to get down to weight didn't do a whole lot for his conditioning but he beat Michael Carr 15-11...This was the last match of Mitch's career so it was a great way for him to go out...I know all of this because I coached Mitch when he was an eighth-grader at St. Columbkille School & I was a senior at Loras College in Dubuque...And we still stay in touch via facebook!
Joe has 2 older sisters that are attending Iowa and his dad(Mitch) works there. If you need to get certified as a coach he would be the guy you want to see. Joe will more than likely end up in Iowa City.

In Gable's book, "A Wrestling Life" chapter 18 "A Total Life" is the inspirational story of how Mitch Kelly hitchhiked to Iowa City to become a walk-on and what Mitch means to Gable.
Joe is a under the radar type kid. Work ethic is phenomenal and strong as a ox. He is very good kid off the mat also.
And their cousin plays another sport at Iowa. That sport that I'm not allowed to talk about on this board.
Great story. It is so hard to walk on(especially if not being a preferred) to a DI school, let alone Iowa. It can be humiliating and often hard to find any positive rewards. Not only did he get his chance to shine on the mat, it obviously started him on his way to success in life. Yet another thing to make me respect Gable even more(not sure that is possible)!

Mitch like to tell you he has the shortest and taller Hawkeye athletes. (the boy is his nephew)
Mitch teaches ed psych at Iowa, and usually teaches 3-4 sections, and his classes are some of the first to fill up, and you cannot get in. Unless you go ask him, and he tells you, just show up, and I will find a way to get you in. He is that kind of a guy. 2 time UI Teacher of the Year, multiple listed as Most Influential Teacher by seniors, given Hawkeye incoming Freshman address.....
Came for absolute abject poverty, to one of the really people you want your son or daughter to be taught by.
And, as he likes to tell it, the difference between him and Coach Gable, is that he WON his last match.
