If you're like me you are/were curious about our chances at these two weights. So I did a little research. I would have loved for Brody to have a chance, but he came up just short this weekend.

165

Of the wrestlers that didn’t get an automatic bid this weekend there are 4 that rank ahead of Rhoads based on RPI. I’m guessing Rhoads’ RPI will go up based on this weekend’s results, but for now here’s how it plays out.

Morelli #9 – finished 8th, B1G got 6 bids, lost to Rhoads.
Krone #22 – Lost his only 2 matches of the weekend…he’s out.
Przybysz #24 – Finished 2nd, SoCon got 1 bid
Buckwalter #25 – Finished 5th, MAC got 4 bids
Rhoads #27 – Finished 7th, B1G got 6 bids, beat Morelli and Krone

If I’m looking at this Morelli and Krone are out, based on this weekend’s results. So it comes down to Przybysz Buckwalter and Rhoads who all finished 1 place outside the automatic bids. Prybysz and Buckwalter have an outside chance at getting the wildcard since they have RPI’s above Rhoads, but again I expect that to change based on this weekend's results. I give Rhoads the bid because it was by far the toughest conference at 165 and his losses are all to top 10 guys.

Hwt
It has to go to Stoll. Finished 8th when the B1G got 7 automatic bids and has the 4th RPI. All three guys ahead of him already punched their tickets. Should be no problem getting the bid.

I like the chances of both

The coaches know Stoll is in, otherwise he wouldnt of FF yesterday
Agreed. Half way through the first session yesterday, I did not see Stoll out walking around and said Iowa was forfeiting and protecting him for nationals. I would not be surprised if his knee was pretty stiff on Sunday as well so don't know how well he will do at nationals. Hopefully, get in a bracket to avoid Grudz, Coon and Snyder for at least two rounds would set him up OK. If he could get a couple matches where he could throw his Greco stuff and get a pin and avoid wrestling underneath that would helpful too

Isn't there more than 1 wild card spot for each of those weights?

I'm pretty sure that each weight class has 29 automatic qualifiers and 4 wildcards!

Road to the Championships
Championship Format
The NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships shall be conducted in the following 10 weight classes:

125 pounds, 133 pounds, 141 pounds, 149 pounds, 157 pounds, 165 pounds, 174 pounds, 184 pounds, 197 pounds, Heavyweights (183-285 pounds)

The same 10 classes will be used in conference and regional qualifying meets. Match times will be seven minutes in duration.

Championship Field
A total of 330 wrestlers (33 per weight class) will advance to the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in New York City. Of those 330 spots, 290 of them will be determined via automatic qualification. The remaining 40 spots will be selected at-large by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee.

Wrestlers can earn automatic qualification to the championships based on place finish at their respective qualifying tournaments, listed below.

The Maryland heavy did not go at BIG's so his auto-qualifier spot was lost. The BIG gets 6 spots at heavy and there are now 6 at-large bids to give.

if only there was a picture in this thread that would show the allocations for each weight we could get down to the bottom of it!

LutherAce - Ha - very interesting as I hadn't seen your post before making mine about 29 auto qualifiers! So why is the NCAA info that I posted not correct stating 4 wild cards at each weight??? Did something change???

in past years, it was 29 allocations per weight and 4 WCs...not sure why this year is different, but maybe there weren't enough wrestlers that made the GOLD/SILVER criteria without "watering down" the competition

also, it doesn't include the situation mentioned above that if the AQ wrestler doesn't compete, they throw the allocation away so B1G HWT will get 6 WC.

Not sure if there were any spots "stolen" by non-AQ wrestlers this weekend, but that would affect wild cards...
Example i just found was that MAC has 5 allocations for 157 pounds, one of those allocations was earned by Ian Miller. Ian had to MFF out of the tournament and placed 8th. NIU's wrestler was .500 unseeded and finished 3rd, so that kid replaced Miller as the AQ, and Miller is going to steal a WC at 157

After reading discussions about how bad Stoll's knee was thought to be I wasn't expecting he would be able to do much this past weekend. I didn't see any of his matches but it looks like he really came through and he had a great weekend, all things considered. Kudos to him. I think he deserves a wild card.

The number of wildcards available isn't just about the allocations, but it's also important to know which people who got an allocation missed out, thus needing one of the WC. People who earned an allocation are likely to be ahead of Rhoads.

Good point

Any idea who/what that number is for heavy?

AA guy is keeping a tally on themat.com. I'm not sure how accurate, but he's a pretty good poster. Shows so far there being 6 WCs available (I believe this includes the one the B1G lost for Peck not weighing in) and Stoll being one of two Allocation Qualifiers who need a WC, so he should be in good position. So far only one at 165 showing as needing a WC after earning the allocation, so Rhoads has a shot. In case anybody thinks it's possibe, Grothus has no shot, with 3 guys who earned allocations needing WCs and only 4 being available.

There were very few upsets at 165. There was one in the MAC, where Juarez qualified from a non-qualified seed. I think this was the only one. I think Rhoads has a great chance to get an at-large birth.

Stoll walked past us going up the stairs twice on Sunday. He was moving pretty slow.

He is/was a shoo-in to make it. He's a top 10 ranked guy. Those types do not get left out of the NCAAs.

On Sunday Sam sat two rows in front of me, and was very relaxed, smiling, joking. But the seats were at the bottom of the section, and he walked up and down the stairs several times. I'm sure the knee is sore, but not enough for him to pamper it.
