Will PSU target/pick-on Riley Moss?

I love Riley, but I worry. He's so young and inexperienced. McSorley is a pretty damn good quarterback and I would think their offensive gameplan will be to throw to the WR being guarded by the new guy.
Can somebody please talk me off the edge here? Thanks!
I'll hang up and listen.

He might as well paint a giant target on his jersey. I hope it backfires but the Nitts will try to exploit Moss' inexperience early and often.

His completion percentage on the year is 54%. That says he/his receivers might have a tough time picking on anybody.

I'm more worried about our safeties getting sucked in because of McSorley being a rushing threat.
That's a legitimate concern also. OTOH, Gervase and Hooker are experienced and pretty disciplined veteran players. Nevertheless. McSorley is a mad scrambler so if containment breaks down and he gets outside the pocket, the Safeties will be under a lot of pressure.

Moss, like all DB's not named King or Jackson, give up some yards on well thrown passes to talented receivers. I've been very happy with the Hawks ability to stop them in their tracks right after the catch (i.e. no YAC), Moss included. If they can effectively complete 5-15 yard completions all the way down the field and score, it's going to be pretty hard to stop.

Yes, they'll throw at Moss, as he is the weakest link.

But, like Mabin, he is better than most Hawkeye fans seem to realize.

Agreed. And Iowa will give up yards and points to this team, this not Maryland Iowa is playing in a windstorm. This is a true dual-threat QB with good running back and skilled but inconsistent receivers. PSU has dropped a ton of passes. Hope that continues.

Funny you bring up Mabin. I always thought the only real issue Mabin had was he often got flagged for PI and most of the time it was simply because he did not find the ball (an issue similar to what Moss has had at times). I always defended him back then I thought he was a darn good corner and was always in position to make the play but just messed it up by not looking back.. Last week a friend of mine says "did you see Mabin is playing in the NFL!? That guy was AWFUL at Iowa!". "Awful corners do not make NFL rosters.

I don't know Riley Moss personally. But I will say this, he has swag. And it's swag I've seen only now and then through my life.

It's swag that says FU to anybody who thinks they can beat him. And it's swag that will almost always win in the end.

Good luck McSore-ass, my money's on the kid.

I mean, Nate's was only 55% last year, he was still pretty productive for us.
He also wasn’t all that accurate...may have been some of the receivers’ fault.

Same with PSU. They are dropping a lot of passes. If they are going to “pick on” Moss. They are either going to have to hit at a much higher percentage, or hit some big plays. It is just really hard to hit Iowa for big plays. If you’re only completely 50%ish of your passes. You’re probably in a lot of trouble against the Hawks.

That said, if anybody can hit some big plays on Iowa, it’s probably PSU.

Duh

First off. Ask Minnesota how targeting moss went. Secondly, our style of defense will not leave moss on an island. We play a tremendous amount of zone. Which, if I remeber right, was the reason king didn’t go earlier in the draft. Teams were afraid king would get burned playing man to man. I think moss will be fine.

Has Brents' coverage really been this good?
This is a good point. Besides the length advantage Brent’s has, he’s been challenged far less regularly then Moss. Is his game tape that off the charts that teams consistently go away from him or perhaps is this an example of overthink a small sample size?

We will see how the rain plays into affects of this game. Hopefully it will negate some of McSorely's elusiveness.

I'm sure they will try. Although, the weather may make passing of any kind problematic.

Forecasting rain for the whole day in Happy Valley neither team may be throwing the ball much.

Well, that is not actually true. Against spread teams we play a lot of 1/4's coverage, especially against trips, which leaves one corner on an island. On 3rd and short/medium, we play a lot of man under.
I never have never seen anything about King not going earlier in the draft because of Iowa playing too much zone. Can you source that please.

For those that are curious, this is close to what our 1/4's coverage looks like. The weak side corner is always in man, and the SS (they have him as DS) has run support. If I remember correctly, if it's a 'sky' call, the DE is the force player and if it is a 'cloud' call, the SS is the force player to the weak side.

Our LEO would be the 'S' guy in this diagram.

Why not try to throw on the most inexperienced DB?

Really though, the Penn St QB will throw to who is open regardless of which Iowa defender is covering.
