So far I have been impressed with the two of them. Both have a lot of growing to do and just how much they grow this season I think will have a lot to do with Iowa's success.

I would love to see Williams shoot more on his drives. Already you can tell teams have him scouted as someone who looks to pass on his drives as the D is always looking to cover his passing lanes and Williams always has space to shoot. Would love to see him work on a pull-up mid range shot or just have the confidence for a little finger roll at the hoop. If he had Bohannon's confidence I think he could avg 8-9 a game as well as open up the lanes for Cook, Uhl, Wagner, Baer and Pemsl.

One thing I would love to see Bohannon work on is his movement and pace when running a faster offense. Fran loves to run with the ball at times and Bohannon loves to zip around the court. However he gets a little out of control at times and doesn't see all of his options. One thing that helps guards like him that can shoot but also have some zip is to slow the pace and take a half sec look to increase your vision of the court at the arc and then either pass to the open man, shoot or drive based on what the D is giving you. He makes that decision often times too far from the hoop and by the time he gets down the court he only has one option. Mike G was guilty of this a lot. He needs that stutter step move to open up the game and see the whole court and work on his vision. He does this and he could get more open looks at 3, dish to the open man or drive in and either get the foul, make the layup or pass to the open guy.

Agree on both players. CW could be more aggressive with his O. JB needs to slow the game down for himself.

Bumping this thread because a UNI thread is at the top right now.

Agree with all of you guys. I think Williams has had a few opportunities to take it all the way to the rim this year that he passed up on. He does seem to be getting better in each game.

Love Bohannon's swagger. He's a good ball handler and can shoot. I'm glad Fran keeps playing these two together.

Disagree
Last night exposed JBo.
He's no where near a Big 10 pg and will be exposed on both ends.

I disagree. If JBo works on the things we've stated above on O he will be a solid offensive PG in the B1G.

On D JBo needs to realize he cant match step for step with a lot of quality teams PG's like he did in high school. He just doesn't have the agility. Instead he needs to take away high percentage playmaking space and move his guy to lower percentage space. He needs to pick his battles and admit to himself he is overmatched at times and move to a more strategic defense and outsmart his opponent. He has enough pace and agility to do this.

Wisconsin has perfected this style of D as they rarely have the agility to match up against blue chip teams. Instead they have 5 guys on the court pushing the offense into low percentage spaces. JBo needs to do this. If he can he will be more than passable B1G PG.

I think our guards have the potential to be average BIG guards when they get much more experience. Right now, we are hurting pretty badly at that position, but we are what we are. Williams needs to get more aggressive and JoBo (who I watched for four years in high school) is a hard-working kid who has always been a hot and cold shooter. I suspect he will stay that way. I just don't know how we keep missing on all the really good guards in the state who always end up at UNI.

Neither is Big Ten PG material and likely will be replaced when someone better becomes available. Bohannan is to slow and non athletic ..he will be fine at a backup role who can spell the eventual PG a few minutes of rest.. He will be a 3 point specialist better than Gesell just limited potential... Williams is not a PG either but has the size and shot to become solid #2 guy in the future. These guys are in the wrong spot but we do not have a choice, best we can hope for is they develop enough to control their turnovers and not hurt us and be able to between the two of them create some opportunities to get the ball to Jok and our other scorers

peckerboy, stop being a dick.

If we all think that 2 young PG's aren't gonna have any turnovers we are dreaming. 3 games is all. Fran will eventually put it altogether before the Big10 hits. Both CW & JoBo will settle into their roles and be effective. Have some faith!!

He had a rough 2 minute stretch. Tends to happen to freshmen.

I haven't seen enough of him to form a strong opinion yet but I don't think he was "exposed."

Our fans are like beer. We're all different and some are kind of all the same mass produced while others are specialty craft beers. Then ya' got your pale ales and lagers and all that.

And some are skunky.

I don't see weights being the answer.
Seems to almost carry the ball while dribbling and zero quicks - needs more foot speed.

CW is a poor ball handler, real problem going left. Bo is really raw that was clearly, and unsurprisingly, lost on more than a few occasions. While they have both shown upside the jury way out on both kids.

Another way to say it as it that neither have played much in their career.

Bohannon and Ellingson play a lot tonight, but Fran was evening out playing time before the schedule turns tough..

Bohannon is currently shooting 24% from the field. Small sample size, but he came in with the reputation of a shooter.

That's alright. Ellingson. Buried up to his neck in an anthill, by his own tribe! Shooting .727 from two, hasn't missed a free throw yet, .625 from three. Oh, and that's 8.7 ppg in 12.3 minutes. :)

I would like to see Fran get CW more minutes with the so called 2unit..JBo more time with PJ...switch it up a little.
I disagree with you here Bob. I see CW as the better PG. Fran appears enamoured with JB over CW and to be forced to start CW because he's earned it.

I sense Fran is trying to build confidense in his freshman and get them as many minutes as he can before the real tests start.

Hang on to your hat against Virginia as they will expose us in ways most don't expect. If you look at turnovers per minute for some of our key players it could get real ugly.

Fran, like most coaches, is pretty demanding of his PG's.

Bohannon got more minutes yesterday because CW was struggling. The other time was last week when CW tweaked his back.

Both will play a lot, both are going to take their lumps.

The lack of a legit PG will haunt this team all season. As we saw when Seton Hall dialed up the defense, we got pushed out beyond the 3 point line because they had no fear of anyone beating them off the bounce. Pretty tough to feed Cook from 25 feet away from the basket.

Fran knows the game and professes to value great PG play, but it does not show in his recruiting. Go get a jet quick PG. I don't care if the guy can throw it in the ocean from 3, but we need someone who get by their guy on offense and stay in front of quick guards on D.

It's like the Ferentz addiction to slow of foot running backs and the impact Wadley has made. Shocking what happens when you have someone with that extra gear or ability to make jump cuts in the hole.

I watched a different game yesterday if Fran or anyone thinks Bohannon outplayed CW. Bo had his worst game of the year. This isn't a knock on him either. He reminds me of MG except I have faith he will eventually make his shots.

That's not what I said. But Fran pulled CW early and then did his usual weird rotation/playing time thing.

CW played 16 minutes and had 4 assists. JB played 24 and had 6.

Actually, every year he's been here he's tried getting those guys. He succeeded once, but once Dickerson hit the floor it was obvious he was out of his element. You can't force guys to accept scholarships. Yeah, it would be great to have Ulis or Moore, but they didn't come to Iowa.

I like that he is playing the field against real opponents instead of using practice scrimmages to determine the starters. Yeah, it cost us during the Seton Hall game, but that loss provided learning opportunities. Look at all your players prior to the big games to know their strengths and weaknesses.

What coach would not want to do that?

I think Williams could develop into a good PG. He has the tools but I don't expect much out of him this year. PG play an defense are this teams weakness but they have to try to find ways to overcome those or at least improve some.
