wisconsin job

Lets hope THey keep Bono! I think The Askren Family would do very well in Wisconsin.

That will probably just make them relevant again. You have to respect what JS did as a wrestler, but he is arguably the worst coach in their history. Only five titles in 30 years. Tommy Chesbro didn't win that many, but had better avg. finishes and wasn't there nearly as long.

Fantastic satire.

That’s just a garbage opinion, especially today. Not my favorite, but the man deserves a lot more respect than this.

Saying he is the worst coach is a bit small minded. The earlier coaches coached were in a different era. There is so much more to winning than there used to be. The techniques have changed drastically during his tenure. The kids and AD's and society has also changed drastically. I am not sure the other guys would have done any better than he did.

Also, you have to account for the fact that they were the premier program for many years. They were like PSU now or Iowa under Gable for most of the early years of D1 wrestling.

He got stuck coaching during two of the greatest coaching dynasty’s in not just wrestling but any sport. He even got one championship during Gables era. As soon as gable retired he was able to start winning them. He’s constantly put a good team out on the mat.

I agree he deserves respect. See my other replies below though.

I agree with everything you said, somewhat. I knew that I would ruffle some feathers with that comment, but I did say arguably. I agree that Gallagher and Roderick might not (probably wouldn't) have faired so well in this era. Gallagher had a lot less competition to deal with in his day, but we'll never know. Great coaches sometimes transcend their circumstances.
BUT, from a purely numbers standpoint, what I said is valid. No other OSU coach ever finished outside the Top 10 either.
I have great respect for him as a wrestler and a coach, but he was #3 on my list of matside whiners, maybe even #2. No one can touch Mark Manning (and now his sidekick Bryan Snyder) but Smith and Bobby Douglas are neck and neck for the #2 spot. Both of them spent more time on the mat (often in the circle) than their wrestlers did.
I think Smith suffers somewhat from the same problem we're having, lack of ability to adapt to the changing sport.

He only overlapped Gable a short time, and the one he won in the Gable era was handed to him by the 167 class, with one overachiever and one underachiever making the difference in the tournament. He didn't win another one until six years after Gable left.

Some of what I said was somewhat tongue-in-cheek (although statistics would back it up). Sorry no emoji was used. He was a great coach and I think we'll miss him, because I think Scott will revitalize the program for a while. They didn't exactly light up this year's tournament though.

Now if you all want to quote me, and argue those points, have at it, but I have a busy day and might not be back on here until tomorrow evening.
