I saw this a lot under Fran last year, but not so much this year. I'm confused about how Iowa players are coached on plays like this. They steal the inbounds and Connor just lets their player go around him for a guaranteed bucket... uhhh, why? It would've been our first foul of the half. Is it not strategically better to aggressively reach for the ball and either get a steal or foul? Why are we doing this still?

We’ve had this same type of breakout at least 6 times this year and Cmac as fouled and got us out of the jam each time. Refs just didn’t call it this time

Connor doesn’t just “let their player go around him”, he fouled him. Watch how he looks at the ref questioning why he didn’t call the foul. As a defender you have to be smart enough to make a “basketball play” or a flagrant could be called.

I honestly thought he was pissed at the ref because of Garza appearing to be fouled. That was a pretty weak attempt at fouling the ball handler, you gotta reach and grab. They're not gonna call a flagrant unless you're behind the guy or tackling him.

All I see on replay is him slightly riding his hip and keeping his hands down.

I know exactly what you mean, too. I've seen CMac grab a guys arms and hold on for dear life to prevent an easy layup. He's a smart player, he just didn't do much here and I wondered why.

If he grabs him ”for dear life” near the basket a flagrant is more likely to be called.
