“He is a very good athlete, extremely fast,” UW outside linebacker Garret Dooley said of Fant. “As outside linebackers, we have to try to be physical with him, try to beat him up at the line of scrimmage so maybe he is not running as crisp of routes and that will help the coverage down the field.

“If we’re lined up on him and he is going out for a pass and we give him a good hit…everything with offense is timing. So our goal is to disrupt that timing.”

Iowa has allowed just 12 sacks in nine games but UW defenders have talked all week about the need to pressure Stanley early and make him feel uncomfortable.

“The key is to get pressure early so that later in the game he is thinking about that pressure,” outside linebacker Garret Dooley said. “Hopefully, he will make some bad decisions.”

Such miscues have been few this season.

“From what I’ve seen, he has done a great job playing with poise,” UW offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph said. “And he is smart. And he plays his tail off. He plays hard.

“That is what you loved about him. He had a great demeanor and skill set. We’re not surprised he is doing well.”

Sooooooo, what I got out of this is.......Ohio State should hire UW Outside linebacker Garret Dooley as their new LB coach.

Nice work kid, one sound bite in the local paper just earned you a power 5 coaching position at a top tier program. Money!

Send TJ and Noah, at minimum I think we'll get some defensive holding/PI calls and can get some yardage that way.

Wiscy has been committing more penalties than usual lately so we need to feast on the free yards we get. They will be more sound than the Buckeyes so we will not get 90+ penalty yards. Hopefully 10 here, 15 there will help sustain drives.

If they key on Fant, look for Hockensen to have a big game. Difficult to stop two good tight ends.

Or could be a breakout game for outside receivers running down the field as safeties may key on Te’s and not helping over the top deep.

Of course, if you were to ask Jewell or Niemann about Fumigalli, they would have said the same exact thing. When you're playing against a really talented TE ... you absolutely cannot let them get a clean release. You need to disrupt their route ... that is Line-Backing 101.

They forgot to mention wadley an d butler out of the backfield catching the ball in space there middle lb is out true frosh stepping in serious mismatch
True ... against most teams the LBs just have to worry about picking up the RB as he leaves the backfield. Against teams with TEs ... you have to worry about both. Against teams like Wisconsin and Iowa, among a few others .... you have to worry about the RB and two TEs. However, most Os only feature 1 TE who is good in the passing game ... Iowa is somewhat unique in often fielding BOTH TEs who are contributors to the passing game.

Iowa is also willing to flex Fant out wide ... and since a LB or S has to worry about him ... that potentially removes a hat from the box. If they play off the LOS in order to read run .... then that gives Fant a cleaner release (of puts him against a safety). If they put a body on him to impact his release .... then it potentially could help our running game.

Actually this makes sense. Fant often times gets off his routes and stanley hasn't been quite as aggressive against the blitz.. I'm sure we have adjustments for it

I expect Kulick to get a lot of snaps as an extra blocker to pick up blitzes and and as a relief valve.

I think playing FB makes sense if you send Wadley out as a check down receiver. We saw vs OSU Wadley as relief valve, he is hard to bring down with one guy covering him.

I expect Wisconsin will look at the Penn State tape and blitz Hawks like crazy. That same tape will show them they have to watch out for Wadley. He is a mis-match in open field.

Enter Wadley. It seems BF is getting better at the counterpunch & I expect them to play a cat/mouse game. There will be options open. Hopefully it all clicks.

BF does a tremendous job with simple formation tweaks with the TE's to create opportunities and mismatches- probably from his days at NE. Last week I saw alot of "inverted" TE formations in which the interior TE was of the LOS and the outside TE was on the line- simple solution to hinder teams from being able to jam the TE. Jamming TE off the LOS is difficult because of the space and if they jam the outside TE who is LOS it opens up running lanes and disrupts gap schemes.....so simple but so effective

Yup. Basically what I gathered from their comments is that Team ButWad is gonna have a big day tomorrow.....:D

Besides, Akrum had a solid game against Ohio State, but now you'd like to see the OK progression and them start to assert themselves and we get not just a good game, but a dominant game from Akrum.

He is due.

with the return of Butler this makes covering Wadley even more difficult as both are threats at catching the ball, Iowa could have used Butler in their losses to PSU, MSU and NW. as they could not have sold out to stop Wadley.

You know...I come here to talk football and enjoy the friendly banter. You have to go and make it X-rated talking about jamming tight ends. This was a kid friendly forum and now it might as well be 1970’s Times Square.

If they spend that much time focusing on the TE's, might just have a big game from Easley,MVB and ISM, not to mention Wadley out of the backfield. Stanley's done a pretty good job of picking the right guy to throw too.

I think that LB's too intensely focused on the TE's will open some running lanes. I don't think they can do it all...run blitz, jam the TE's, defend the run, defend the RB's as receivers etc.

Pick you're poison. This team really has a lot of weapons. If the O-Line performs, we'll score some points.

"Pressure Nate Early"
When I first first read that I thought two things - when was he added to the roster and is he the son of Quinn Early?

If their linebackers are going to try and take away Fant and TJ, that should open the door for swing passes to backs into the flats and allow more downfield throws to MVB, ISM, Smith, and Easley.

And if Iowa can take away the run from Wisky and force Hornibrook to throw the ball, I like Iowa's chances. It will be a low scoring game, especially if the weather is cold, wet, and windy. It's gonna be a grinder!

Iowa has to start out with quick passes. You are right we have 2 really good tight ends, but we also have one of the most explosive receiving running backs coming out of the backfield. We have more than enough weapons to attack a blitzing defense.

It should also open up the run game. I'll be thrilled if they go out there trying to take away the pass. Should allow Wadley and Butler to run for some big gains. But I doubt they'll sell out on the pass. They'll stack the box at the beginning of the game like everyone else has. The one thing I am worried about is that they blitz better than any team Iowa has faced this year, including OSU and Penn State. That will be the real challenge for Iowa this game.

Wisconsjns LB’s are not better in any category then Ohio States....Fant and Hockenson should have no problem getting open in the middle of the field.

th
Oh, no! Wisky is going to beat up Fant!

Agreed however Bucky’s LB’s are better coached and will actually be in the right position with the right assignments.

OSU’s LB’s last week might as well have been 3 blind mice.

Give me average athlete in the right position over superior athlete with zero football IQ any day.

Well, that is exactly what happened. Fant was on a milk carton, Stanley made plenty of mistakes, Wadley was ineffective, and the OL collectively shit their pants.
