(Gray News) – A woman in Indiana won the top prize of $500,000 on a scratch-off ticket from the Michigan lottery she ended up with during a white elephant gift exchange on Christmas.

Emily Hickox, who was also celebrating her 25th birthday the same day, said her dad initially won the Detroit Lions instant game ticket during the gift exchange and she had won the flashlight he brought as a gift.

Hickox said her dad wanted the flashlight back, so they made an agreement after the game to trade gifts.

Expecting to see $50,000, Emily Hickox said she was speechless when she saw the extra zero.

“I scratched the ticket off on Christmas, which also happens to be my birthday, and thought I won $50,000,” Hickox told officials with the Michigan Lottery.

She downloaded the app and checked her ticket on the scanner.

Expecting to see $50,000, Hickox said she was speechless when she saw the extra zero.

“I couldn’t comprehend that I’d just won $500,000,” she said.

“Winning a prize of $500,000 is a thrill in itself, combined with the excitement of winning on Christmas, and your birthday, from a ticket you received as a gift makes it even more incredible,” Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli said in a statement.

According to lottery officials, Hickox plans to buy a new car, invest and share some of her winnings with her cousin who purchased the ticket, and her parents.

Why did she admit that? Now there will be someone from that group that is going to try and sue her to get "their cut". She might win the case, but there have been plenty of instances where they don't.

Pro tip: If you ever win the lottery from a ticket like this, immediately go out and buy another ticket of the same game before reporting your win so when someone tries to sue you for a cut of your winnings you can make the claim that the ticket you bought is the winner.
