Iowa City
up 1 ..9 minutes left on BTN...oh crap make it down 1...
against #18 MSU...in Breslin..
come on Hawks...lets sweep in Lansing.

Talk about an implosion, what'd they have 36 points at halftime? 11 points now in the 3rd/4th Q combined? They did this against Michigan too I believe. As it stands now, I am not sure this is an NCAA tournament team. They really miss the group of seniors from last year.

THey also lost to Michigan after leading thru 3 quarters.
Cannot do anything in the 4th quarter. lately....
Not enough help for Ally Disterhoft, unfortunately

Not the first 4th quarter letdown-- is it lack of conditioning for the big girls???

I'm not making excuses, really. BUT, this team has a freshman and sophomore guard court. The team can get rattled when you turn up defensive pressure. The second thing is the officiating in women's college basketball leaves a lot to be desired, sometimes the games are hard to watch because the officiating is so bad.
The MSU coach could also give Izzo lessons in working the officials,.;)

Too many turnovers and many unforced. Started third and fourth quarters with something like 3-4 turnovers straight. Only couple forced.
Been a rough two weeks but hopefully get things straightened out
Lisa Bluder will be at Iowa long time to think she will be fired is ridiculous, even if posted as sarcasm

That Iowa team looks out of shape to me. They seem to have no gas in the tank by the 4th quarter. This has been a problem in several games. Lisa is going to have to give the reserves more minutes in the 1st half I would say. They inexplicably just quit playing defense at all in the 4th quarter. I really like Lisa Bluder but something is wrong here.

It is pretty much a typical Bluder team, but not as good because of youth. Good offensively, although live and did by 3 ball; too many turnovers, and not real good defense. Gustafson is the first physical presence inside in forever, but sh's just a freshman. Overall, Bluder is a good coach, is starting to recruit better; maybe will sometime get to a Top 10 level.

In the women's game there is such a big difference between the upper echelon teams and everyone else.

Bluder can spit out a decent team in the Big 10 but when they face the top dogs in the country the difference in talent is night and day. Iowa can do well against other "decent" Big 10 schools but when it comes to playing a Duke, UConn, etc., they are completely outmatched. One of the big differences in the women's game... There are the "top dogs" and then "everyone else."

Bluder is not gone. The expectations are being met. I have watched most of the games this year. Here are my grades. This team has no scrappers...except Ally D. She is a baller. The rest...pretty weak. Not going to be a very good year.

Bluder-D
Jensen (Bigs)-D
Fitz (Guards)-D
Disterhoft-A
Kastenak-C
Jennings-D
Davis-C
Peschel-D
Coley-B
Gustafson-B
Buttenham-B

The comments about Bluder being on thin ice or gone are toungue-n-cheek. It was a reference to the same ridiculous comments about Fran made by some in our fan base over the past couple of years including this one. Bluder has done a great job over the years and runs a good program.

We just graduated the most productive senior class in FOREVER. Did anyone seriously predict no drop off this year? I knew that the season would have pleasant surprises and surprising loses. This is a brutal stretch of games for any team, but look ahead. We lose only one senior with productive minutes, regain Mohns, and have a returning core with important experience. I desperately want the team to be competitive every game, win 'em all at home, no let downs, yadda-yadda... but based on the season's current stats, we bring back almost everything. Here is a chart of what we had coming back for this year (we LOST 48% of our scoring) and what we will lose after this year (we LOSE only 15% of our scoring) based on current stats.

So relax a little bit.

Excellent point! Iowa lost 48% of their minutes, 42% of rebounding and 56% of their scoring. In view of this, it should not be surprising that Iowa's scoring has declined while their rebounding has shown signs of relative improvement. Iowa will no doubt be more experienced next year, but they still have twelve conference games yet this season (five of their last seven at home), plus post-season, and are still gaining experience with each game.
Also consider the fact that four of their five losses occurred on the road against more experienced teams. (Three of those were in the opponents home court) Except for GW, Iowa had sizable double-digit leads, and that game went into double overtime. In all four, Iowa led for a majority of the games. All but MSU, Iowa had a chance late (in the closing seconds). Iowa still had a lead entering the fourth quarter against them and was beginning to adjust to the increased defensive intensity of MSU. Iowa just does not yet have the age and physical maturity yet to deal with the level of defensive intensity that is permitted in the B1G. But they will with time.
The B1G schedule has been brutal thus far but Iowa will finish the regular season with five home games in their last seven. With a young team, the scheduled has not been ideal. Still, I believe they will be a better team down the stretch for it. I think by tournament time they will be a much improved team. The things that have been hurting them are all things that will improve as they gain more experience.
Certainly I was hoping they could win these games, but I was not expecting it. One could say that the way they lost is disappointing, but it was predictable and I say that [because of their youth] it is encouraging that they were able to build such large leads to begin with. I still have faith in this team.

Mohns huge loss. Buttenham not contributing like I expected her to. Yes they should improve down the stretch, hopefully in the tournament. Help is on the way with another great class coming in.

While Carly's injury certainly did not help Iowa's cause, her actual loss is immeasurable. Iowa does have depth at forward so they should not have a huge drop in that regard. Christina just turned 19 at the beginning of the school year so is not much older than the freshmen. Her defense and rebounding are positives. She has been inconsistent offensively, but that is typical of younger players. That will no doubt change as she matures and gains experience.

Sure...a drop-off had to be expected. This is a young team that is developing. I have watched most of the games. What is see is way too many unforced, sloppy turnovers and critical times. That may be youth. Or...it could be that Iowa lacks athletic players who can handle the pressure at crunch time. Logic could...so far Jennings/Davis cannot. Or...maybe the coaching strategy needs to improve.

I agree that losing Mohns was big. She was really coming on and may have taken a lot of Peschel's minutes.

The future is bright as next year's team returns a great nucleus and Disterhoft will be the clear leader! Maybe one of the freshman guards will surprise!

The balance of this season could be entertaining if the Hawks improve their 2nd half performances. The schedule gets more manageable which hopefully leads to a 9th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

One of the big differences in the women's game... There are the "top dogs" and then "everyone else."

In reality there is usually one top dog (UCONN), 6-8 or so other schools (ND, Baylor, Stanford, MD...) that can maybe stay within 15 points of that top dog, and then everyone else.

This is true. Contrast with the men's game, where it was an upset (but not if epic proportions) to have Kansas lose on the road to a 9-8 Okie State team. One of the top 5 teams in women's hoops just doesn't lose to a team in the 80-100 range.

Hopefully as the depth of quality players in women's hoops improves we will see the the proliferation of good talent to more teams. I do think going to 13 scholarships for the women instead of 15 would help even the playing field. That's two less players going to the likes of UConn. ND, Maryland, etc. but politically it won't happen.
