Would Iowa have been #1 in 1985, if NFL payday was similar back then to today?

After the 1984 season, two Iowa players had opportunities to move onto the NFL or come back. One left, I believe a first for Iowa and one came back and helped lead Iowa to a #1 ranking over five weeks.
  • TE Jon Hayes was the player to leave early
  • QB Chuck Long stayed, but would he if today's payday was in place
QB Tua Tagovailoa declared for the NFL Draft in 2020. Of course, would Chuck Long had been a #1 draft pick had he left for the 1985 draft, like Hayes?

CB Desmond King decided to come back for his senior season, but S Geno Stone decided to leave, which clearly is his liberty, as a person.

Was King ready back when he decided to comeback?

The decision appears to be a prudent one, based on how his career has played out. For Stone, I hope he is making the right decision. But, best wishes to him.

The 2020 team should remain competitive, though one of the biggest questions will be in special teams, at punter.

Would Iowa have been as competitive in 1985 with Mark Vlasic at QB, had Chuck Long left for the NFL?

At the next level, Vlasic was more successful than Long in the NFL. Better career.

Wow, how history could have played out differently for the University of Iowa lore?
