Would Spencer Lee win an Olympic gold this year...

To answer the OP question which seems to have been lost in all this. The answer is no. Back when they had that low a weight it was not a huge scramble for countries to find a body there. The Asians, Russians and Eastern European countries had men there. Men. Tim Vannie was a tough sob and he had trouble placing in the top 5. They did not have kids in those classes. As great as Lee is at this point, those countries had fully mature men there. I doubt a 16/17 could overcome that. Not saying Lee would not be up to the challenge. I think he would make a great showing. Those guys were tough, elete men. Small but still men.

Agree. Vanni was 27 in '88, and 31 in '92. Rob Eiter was 28 in '96. At 114.5 Jones was 26 in '92. Rosselli was ~25 in '96. The only top college-age guy I can remember at those weights was Chertow at 114.5 in '88...and that was an upset. Valentin Jordanov from Bulgaria at 114.5 was one of the best P4P wrestlers ever. He was 32 in '92. Those weights weren't as deep as higher weights, but the top guys were great.

As for who might have won at 114.5 had they continued the weight class, my only guess is Rosselli in 2000, since he was Olympian in '96 and could've made the weight. Henson, who took silver at 119, might have been able to make the lower weight too.

After that I don't have an opinion.

A couple months ago I heard from numerous Penn State fans the answer to your question. Suriano will wrestle 125 this upcoming year and then move to 133 when Spencer Lee gets on campus.

PSU is now actively recruiting Daton Fix.

I am going to regret the feeding, but do you believe you will get Fix away from Smith AND he will be @125?

Sorry, Fix is going to be a Cowboy. If Smith can't secure him, he's stated he's going to retire and coach the Ruskies. Does anyone else smell toast.......

We can use this, and repeat it ad nauseum if PSU gets him. Doesn't matter if Spencer lost the last two matches.

In fairness, this match was from when they were the same size. I assume in college they will only face each other if they are, once again, similar size.

I'd say that the fact that they were the same size for this match, even though it was three years ago, means that this match probably gives a better idea of how their skill sets compare than the more recent match, where Fix was clearly bigger.
