Would you like the media to cover Iowa's program like they do in the Twin Cities?

No, thanks. I know a lot of people, including myself, get tired of the rah-rah positive spin type columns and talk sometimes but I'm really glad that the media in the state doesn't try to actively undermine the program in an effort to create a little stir and generate some clicks. In this instance, however, I am glad that it is happening to Minnesota and I hope their dumpster fire of an athletics program continues to blaze.

Makes me glad we had a Rick Brown around for so many years. And Chad does a nice job too as does MM in CR. Plus I'll throw in a guy named Tom Kakert as another positive member of the press who does an excellent job.

I do love the state of Iowa!

2bagger is right. That being said, the Twin Cities sports media is about as cynical as they come. (Patrick Reusse being exhibit A). Not "tough"...there are plenty of markets where it's tough...Philly, Boston, etc... but inherently negative and cynical. I mean come on, the guy has coached 5 games. I'd hate to be a college coach in this market.

Most mouthpieces feel PJ hasn't proved anything and so far it's all been hype, which is hard to deny.

My only comment to that is that Kirk's first year wasn't too good either. Neither was Fleck's at WMU.

Just a little side note, but Justin Gaard from KFAN has Iowa roots. His dad is from Waverly and played baseball at Wartburg. His uncle lives in Decorah.

Leistikow seems to strike the right tone. He isn't afraid to criticize, but at the same time isn't tearing into players or coaches just to draw attention.

The worst, by far, locally is Randy Peterson with the register. He's such a biased suck up and cheerleader for the 'clones that he should be on their SID payroll.

Gaard played tennis at Iowa for a year or two before transferring to St. Thomas. He'll often make reference to Brother's, Sports Column, and other haunts. He covers the Gophers but paints Iowa in a positive light.

Did not know he attended Iowa. I know he grew up in the cities. His dad & uncle are friends and I've met Justin a time or two at football games. Really good guy.

Pretty sure he and Chris Williams have some kind of secret relationship...

This goes back to the posters here who are always asking for the reporters to ask the "tough questions" and want KF put on the witness stand to defend every play call, personnel decision and game time decision. It's counter productive and creates a negative air about the program. I can't fathom why anyone thinks that's a good idea, but I have a couple theories:
1) Either they're not really hawk fans and are just trying to stir discontent
or...
2) They're the negative type of personality that aways focuses and thrives on the bad.

Either way, bad for the program.

Sometimes leistikow can be a little too nice when writing about the hawks but he is fair when he needs to be.. I would much rather have that than our media trying to undermine Iowa at every turn.

The gloss on PJ seems to be tarnished a bit already.

A constant diet of PJ’s bullshit would drive me away fast. FAST!!!

Reusse points out that the Gophers first 5 games were supposed to be their easiest and they came out 3-2 and now PJ is trying to downplay expectations.

Souhan made fun of PJ and the outfits he wears at the weekly press conferences, saying he would have gotten beaten up in high school if he came dressed to school looking like that.

Kirk didn't take over a 9-4 team.

inheriting a 9-4 team is another thing Reusse brings up; Fleck says this is not year 1, but year ZERO.

Year Zero? Has anyone ever heard the first year called year zero? So this year does not count? Apparently, according to PJ, unless of course, he would have had a great season.

PJ has been constantly compared to Tim Brewster with his rah rah style and we all know how Tim Brewster's tenure at Minny ended; people seem to be holding their breath, hoping that PJ is not the second coming of Tim Brewster.

i don't know how (or if) Reusse and Souhan get access to major head coaches the way they constantly bash them;

Reusse has an afternoon radio show and I wonder if he ever gets PJ or Zimmer on as a guest

Fleck lost me forever this year when I turned over to their game and he was running down the sidelines at full speed for absolutely no reason.
You hung in there with him longer than me. I said it before he coached a game at Minn. The guy's a flop & I hope Minn is already looking for their next head coach.

Year zero. Really. Reminds me of what urban Meyer said early this year they aren't your inherited players when you take the job they are your players. Sure his upperclassmen love to hear this year zero BS especially the seniors. Will enjoy watching PJ's sinking boat. By the way how lame is the row the boat slogan and even worse how obsessed he is with it.

Made me laugh.

Something about the Twins Cities media, they just love to pile on the entire Gopher athletic department. At the same time, they are relatively easy on their pro sports teams, nothing like the Boston, New York, etc media with the way they treat their pro teams. But the Gophers, just keep piling on them. They are still piling on the Gopher hockey program for being in the Big Ten Hockey Conference, something they have no control over. I sometimes feel bad for the Gophs, sometimes.

Why the Twin Cities media thinks the gophers will ever rise above Minnesota Mediocrity is beyond me.

I get your feelings about the football program, but the athletics programs/ department as a whole has been decent. The big two have been subpar.

Look at the history of gopher sports especially the last 40 years. No meaningful football seasons, Clem Haskins and the bball scandal with banners removed from The barn, the brawl between goofs and osu back in the 70s, Dutcher's players arrested for rape, Norwood Teague behavior, Jim Wacker era, Tim Brewster era, the latest rape scandal last fall/winter. TCF stadium/ U of M losing money on beer sales. The list just goes on and on.It's like shooting fish in a barrel up here. That's why the media goes after them and the fans are so apprehensive if anything possible happens they know something bad will happen. i.e. Gopher basketball losing their 5 vs 12 matchup after having a very good regular season after sucking with no expectations.
Mn is cursed and I enjoy it.

Also, finally finding a good football coach but has to retire do to health issues. That part sucks as I like Jerry Kill. He was exactly what Mn needed after Brewster.

Minneapolis is a pro sports town any mention Minnesota gets is after the Vikings,Timberwolves,Twins and Wild.

I'd put Tpups behind goofs for the last 10 years.
Actually media routinely started with the rape allegations last winter on news coverage and the Teague firing. So the goofs are relevant when they terrible PR.
