Would you want to be hawkeye mbb coach?

Of course I would. I wouldn't be great and you all would question my decisions but we would:
- press all the time
- play lots of zone to trap
- Look to get the ball in the paint first
- not be afraid of midrange shots under 10 seconds on the shot clock
- I love drawing up inbounds plays to score
- I would play with an old school 5.
- offense is a lot of read and react with off ball screens and on ball screens.

Unfortunately, my system is great in junior high... probably not great in college, haha.

My dad was a great bb coach. He said taking over a hungry job is a great idea.
Hell yes. I can teach blocking out and defense in about half an hour, so Iowa would be light years better immediately. I would demand to play Drake and UNI every season, alternating home and away. I would NEVER schedule a team below 200 in the NET. I'd demand students get in free and ring the entire arena. I'd demand a major renovation of the whole damn place.

And I'd do it all for well below market rates . . . $2 mil a year. Where do I sign?

Now it's time to take your medication and go for a walk around the facility.

Depends on what my other choices were. If it's Minnesota or NC State, sure. If it's Indiana or Virginia or Villanova, nah...I'm good.

Iowa is a tough gig in a difficult league. If we compensate accordingly, I see no reason why we can't attract competitive candidates.

Indiana is pretty close to being the Nebraska of college basketball.

Wouldn't work. Not enough 3 pt shooting for the modern basketball player.................

I agree. I coach junior high where their club coaches all tell them to chuck and my best 3 point % on the team is just over 35-40% where the rest are under 25%. As an undefeated team I think we shot 22% from 3 this year? When I got them to attack down hill and score inside we won by a lot.

NIL
Coaches/consultants/advisors
Facilities
Academic support
Pretty much whatever you say you need to hang banners, it will be provided post haste.

I don't even know where you're going with this...? It's obvious that IU can and does invest significantly more in every aspect of its basketball program than Iowa.
It is odd. While Nebraska has way bigger challenges in football, especially in a small state for recruiting, IU has zero excuses. Great fan support, legendary arena, great tradition, big NIL, basketball is the number 1 high school sport in Indiana and nothing else is close. The last truly good coach they had was Sampson, who got fired for of all things sending "to many texts " to recruits! Lol. Don't understand it.

It's pretty much a 24/7 job between practice, games, recruiting, administrative stuff, meeting with donors, media appearances, etc. I'd love the paycheck, but I don't think I could do that for very long.

I know this will get mocked but Fran honestly had mostly "upper division" finishes in his time here. Time just caught up to him. SEC has clearly moved to the number 1 bball conference right now. They have a ton of really really good coaches and a lot of money that they aren't afraid to spend. Still, even if we're the 2nd best conference out there that still makes Iowa an attractive job. There's only so many high profile jobs in a power conference. We are one of them. While not winning championships, we have been a pretty consistent NCAA tournament team over the last 40 years. We need to obviously get the fan base back and NIL and energize the base but it's still a top 30-35 job in the entire country.

I guess....In the history of the NCAA Tournament (86 years), Iowa has appeared 29 times. 21 of those appearances were in the last 40 years.

For comparison, Kansas has appeared 28 times since 1990 alone (53 total appearances). Gonzaga has 26 since 1999.

Schools like Purdue and Illinois have 36 appearances all time. So yeah...I would say we've been pretty consistent getting in. Now actual success in the NCAA Tournament? That's a very different story.

Let's see:
  • One of the most patient administrations offering head coaches among the best (if not THE best) job security in the country, in a profession where longevity is quite often measured in single-digits? Check.
  • Annual expectations below championship level? Check
  • Fanbase itchin' to be "rabid" again, and proven to support and show up for basketball when the product is worthy? Check.
  • Accumulating generational wealth from day 1? Check.
Yeah...what an absolutely terrible place to work.

YOu sound like Div1 coaching material.

I can assure you I'm not. I don't handle it well when I get accused of playing politics or favorites when I 100% do not. Some parents don't see that spending thousands of dollars on club is for their kids development and enjoyment but doesn't mean they are going to be the best on the floor. Also, all other kids are doing the same. So reading this site might kill me.

Plus, I wouldn't begin to be able to adjust for the college game with the things I don't know.

There are reasons why college basketball coaches make more than brain surgeons.

1. Fans
2. Social media
3. Press conferences
4. Recruiting
5. Success depends on 18-22 year olds performing well.

The money would be great. The job would be like having your nuts in a vice.

This is true..have you noticed how coaches age faster than most
It reminds how fast presidents age.
