WR Frank Darby headed to Arizona State

Good luck to Frank...hope he has a good career at ASU. Stuck with the Hawks for a long time...just didn't work out for everyone involved.

Former Hawk player and long time NFL/college coach-Jay Norvell-will be his position coach at ASU..Think he was his lead recruiter, as well.

ASU may not make waves in the national title hunt, but they always have stud skill position players. They play a fun style of offense/no defense, and have some of the hottest co-eds in the land. Good choice for the kid after getting spurned by our coaching staff. He sounds like an academic risk, but he sure seemed like a risk worth taking given our problems at the position.

Can someone enlighten me on why he didn't come here when Iowa seemed to stick with him? Or did Iowa want him to go prepschooling or something?
Iowa wanted him to attend prep school for 1 semester. There had been some question about his academics. He recieved the grades/scores he needed. Iowa still wanted him to attend prep school for 1 semester. Darby knowing he was qualified said thanks, but no thanks. He then went on a couple visits to schools-ASU,BC, and Rutgers, maybe some others. He announced the few schools he would be choosing from. Iowa was not on that list..

Edit- this is just a simple/basic breakdown. Obviously there could be a heck of alot more to it. The staff had to have done their "homework", and they know a hell of alot more than I ever would know about the sutuation.

Hey, I'm quite familiar with the situation. Frank was eligible. Iowa just wanted him to go to the prep school for that first semester. IMO Iowa had given his scholarship slot to someone else because they thought he wouldn't have qualified. Thats the nuts and bolt of it.

What was the reason for paying for him to come out on an official visit if they had given his slot to someone else?

GOOD QUESTION! Because they had the prep school idea all along. I guess they wanted to entice him. Bring him in on an official visit and to let him know they were serious about him. But they still wanted him to attend the prep school for that first year. That he wasn't gonna do. End of story.

No doubt. He fits the mold for the perfect ISU/Nebraska troll. Puts something Iowa or Hawkeye in his name and then commences to not find one positive thing to ever say about Iowa.

It's not like you have to be all sunshine and puppies but when you can't ever find anything positive to say except about the kids that aren't here (Darby, Lombardi and Willies), you pretty much cement your claim to fame. Troll!

This clearly isn't true, we know they have schollys open because Harris and Truit are gone and the coaches obviously knew they were likely leaving. The above is conjecture and an attempt to rationalize. I wanted Frank Darby but Iowa has plenty of experience with grade cases going clear back to Willie Guy. We aren't getting the whole story and neither is Udawg69. Even if he thinks he is. I hope he does well but it will be interesting to see if he hits the field 1st year. Incidentally from everything I've heard ASU isn't Big 10 level academically.

Cmhawks99 you are correct. They knew those players were leaving, and the scholarships were going to be available, but they wanted him to wait until mid June to finalize the offer. Frankie didn't want to take that risk. Even though the scholarships were going to be available, Iowa at the last minute would turn around and ask him to do the one semester at the prep school. Hence, he went on his visits and decided to become a sun devil.

Well I appreciate the follow up but that's not what you indicated at first. In fact I think you said IMO they gave away his scholarship.

Cmhawk99 my apologies...in giving wrong information. But "WE" insist that they didn't have a scholarship readily available at the time of the visit. When I tell you I know the backstory on the recruitment m, let's just say I'm well versed on the Recruitment of Frankie by Iowa. But it's all good, he landed at a good spot to further his student-athlete career.

Now we're just arguing semantics about the scholly situation. It sounds like Iowa always had a spot for him but they didn't think he was ready for the academic side of college. From what I've read Iowa had a different plan than Frank and his family had so they parted ways. There weren't really any hard feelings from either side, either.

Yes I assumed you were either a coach, sibling, friend uncle, parent etc....I understand your position and Frank seemed like an awesome young man and a fine player. With that said you know what you know on your side and then like all of us you fill in the blanks on the rest to explain away what you don't understand. Here is what we as Iowa fans know...

Iowa needs high quality WR's, not next year but this year. Now we can assume they now are more secure in what they have but even so, they still need as many play-makers as they can get...

We also know this isn't the first time a situation like this has happened. We have even had situations where things appeared to be all systems go and then suddenly at the end it was dead stop....

We also know that Iowa's admissions department may NOT have been on board with immediate admissions, nor would they have likely told you that....Hence the "wait"..

So in short no matter what you or Frank have thought all evidence suggest if Iowa thought he could play this year he'd be at Iowa.

Definitely not trying to be rude because as I said I wanted Frank to be at Iowa. Just stating what I see now and in the past. We also know he is now clear across the country at ASU which has much more lax admissions. And yes I have some prior knowledge of kids that have enrolled at ASU. One being my bosses daughter and she did not have good grades or transcripts.

That's correct..."NO HARM, NO FOUL"

I think he seen AZ ST as a better option for him at this time in his career.. Best of luck to you;) Mr.Darby

After the mention of hot coeds from ASU, am I the only one disappointed to find zero pics as evidence of this claim?

I truly believe it is a game he plays. He likes to get a rise out of Hawk fans. Not sure why he has a hard on for Ferments and Iowa, always taking shots. Not a lawyer but probably a loser.

What was the reason for paying for him to come out on an official visit if they had given his slot to someone else?

If I had to guess they had to operate on the assumption he wouldn't make it and then try to find a way to get him here if he did. I think that is the safe assumption the majority of times with these situations.
