First of all. Yikes. There was been one contributor (Smith-Marsette) successfully recruited as a WR to Iowa the past 5 years. I can see why there has been almost no WR production the past few years.

Should the strategy going forward be to concentrate heavily on the JUCO/transfer market to get better production/consistency out of that unit?

We are a team that loves to run into 8 and 9 man fronts. Total inability to take advantage of that with the passing game. Scratch where it itches is not Kirk's way. Just keep banging your head against the wall. He comes out of it once in a while then goes right back into run run pass punt. Luckily we finally have a punter that can get us better field position.

This kid Denver Holman that Blair Tweeted about is from Belton same school as Mansell. Not the biggest but could be a McCarron type burner.

To the tune of 5 Top 10 finishes! Congrats and thanks Hawks and KF!

And yet Stanley came within 1 touchdown of Chuck Long’s record last year.

That would be one thing Stanley/Iowa did well--score on limited yardage. Out of 130 teams, Iowa was 95th in rushing yards per game and 94th in passing yardage and 114th in total offense. Iowa did manage to be 59th in scoring offense. Iowa was 26th in turnover margin and had Josh Jackson, so that helped Iowas offense because the defense scored on pick 6 or gave Iowa offence a short field.

As far as WR recruiting, punting a lot and being 94th in passing yards is probably not a good selling point.

Oh, so Kirk doesn't get credit for the defensive success but does for any offensive struggles...sounds about right

Dude, don't try to turn this into a discussion of Kirk's overall successes as a coach.

This is strictly about Iowa's WR usage under Kirk. Not good.

It all fits together and has spelled success! I get most people want 350 yard passing days every week but what they do works and it works at a high level!

You're doing it again! Pushing this discussion towards one about Kirk's overall success.
Nobody is questioning that (in this thread at least)

I get it, I'm a Kirk supporter too overall, and glad he is still around, for the most part.

However, the WR usage sucks.
It sucking has NOT been part of the plan.
Better WR usage, hell, at least average WR usage, certainly would have helped get more wins.
That's the point here.

We have Ups n Downs at WR just like every position. A down cycle the last 2 years that now has the arrow starting to point up. "Usage" you keep saying?? JUST A few years ago they "Usage"d them to within a stop of playing in the Final 4 of Football. Pretty darn good stuff! Be Happy!

What would you point at as the last time our recievers were "average"? Not, the team won games, specifically the WR.

Iowa Western CC has a former 4 star WR from U of Kentucky Javonte Richardson. Iowa has not offered but could be in the mix soon. Ohio native.

Iowa may be watching AJ Epenesa's old HS in Edwardsville on Kendall Abdur Rahman as a Micah Hyde clone who plays an option QB. He could become a good WR.

Obviously, Iowa want a kid like David Bell. Purdue losing its first two game of the season cannot bode well for them. tOSU already has two of its three scholarship slots take and another may be taken after today's game . Wait and see. Iowa seems to offer late a MAC type kid from Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin area that do not land a B1G offer from the Blue Bloods. Iowa does get some talent by the process of scarce scholarships.

I think a major problem in evaluating the actual talent of our WRs is our fundamental scheme. Not only do we not force balls to our WRs, we simply don't scheme to "let them make plays" as a part of our offensive strategy. Our strategy is ball control, clock control, and minimizing risk. I actually think that our guys would make plays if they were given a chance. I think B Smith would come down with a lot of balls if we just threw it up to him. He's going to make mistakes, like getting pinched to the sideline last week, but I truly believe that he and ISM have more than enough talent to give us what we need if we just give them opportunities to make plays.

Establishing the run and using TEs will only help, but we need to give these guys a chance to make plays. B Smith has done this consistently in practice and I truly believe he can and will do it in games too. As a former WR, this part of being an Iowa fan is painful... but I have enormous faith in the talent of our current crop, I just want to see us throw to them. I think challenging defenses down the field is the single factor that could determine if this is an average season or a phenomenal one.

Not sure why JUCO/transfer players are thrown out in this discussion.
