I had a chance to talk to Mark Ironside at his store the other day. I told him that I did PBP on this website and that a lot of posters enjoy having me post his "radio PBP color" comments. That led me to ask getting wrestling on WMT-AM600. Mark suggested that WMT doesn't think that there are enough people interested in listening to wrestling on the radio. Mark also said that if people want Iowa Wrestling on AM600 that we should contact JJ Cook, Sr. VP of Programming. His email is jjcook@iheartmedia.com.

It is probably too late for anything this year, but I think I'll email tomorrow and would encourage others to do so as well. Not sure what can happen. I will then repost this next fall.

Val-

Here is the response I got form JJ Cook.

Thanks for your request. Unfortunately there is not enough advertising support to carry the broadcasts and they also prevent us from carrying any Iowa sports on the internet.

Please put Iowa Wrestling on AM 600.

Thanks Luke Sanders

Don't let that response discourage others from emailing in (which I know was not your intent). If enough people email in they can take that out to advertisers which may then lead to the money needed to air it. At worst you've wasted a minute of your day sending an email.

Can you imagine the response from listeners if they pulled Rush Limbaugh to cover live college wrestling? I have a grandpa who would literally die of outrage.

A quick thought about WMT's Luke Sanders comment; "… not enough advertising support to carry the broadcast". Last fall while traveling through Iowa I dialed in the Iowa vs. Minnesota football game. I'm certain the game was syndicated because all available stations (including WMT) carried the same broadcast. That broadcast was the most dreadful broadcast of any sporting event I have ever heard/listened to. I swear the broadcast was nothing more than wall-to-wall advertising. Examples; this first down sponsored by …; this time out sponsored by…; the yard marker sponsored by …; the grass sponsored by …! The football game was only incidental to the advertisements. The broadcasters were simply advertising sales people (shills) who by coincidence were watching a football game.

If that airing of Iowa football is representative of the "advertising support" radio WMT needs in order to carry the broadcast(s) University of Iowa wrestling, then "I shall not listen". I've always enjoyed Ironside, Ramos, and the rest of the crew, but radio WMT, wow, absolutely horrendous. GO HAWKS!

OKay, btw This is a (mostly) nonviolent revolution.

1) We start with a few emails (check).
2) Then next wrestling season (about the wrestle offs time) we start with constant emailing of the WMT.
3) Then we followed up with directly contacting wrestling sponsors (who advertise on KXIC) to suggest that they help us get it on WMT,
4) Next, we start bugging the sponsors of Iowa athletics on WMT and suggest that they sponsor wrestling.

The plan does not advocate violence but at some point in time...

5) we threaten an Ironside double leg takedown and accompanying chicken wing.

I've got this on my calendar for next fall.

WMT isn't the originator of Iowa football broadcasts nor would they be the originator of Iowa Wrestling broadcasts.

As for the football broadcasts, football on the radio is filled with advertisements as you described. The problem with the Iowa broadcasts is that Dophin calls the action on the field very poorly so there is no balance, thus the advertisers stick out like a sore thumb.

I have listened to Dolph while sitting in the stands and its like your watching a different game. Could you imagine Dolph calling wrestling. "Sorensen has reached the CASE IH TAKEDOWN CLUB" "The next takedown by an Iowa Hawkeye will win you a Dominos pizza." Ironside draws a name out. "Glen Hossenfefer has won a pizza" "Mark what was the score of that match? sponsored by the Johnson County rotary Club" We will be back in a moment for the Applebees post match report. Go to your nearest Applebees for a Terry and Tom Brandwich!

I finally sent my email to JJ Cook about the chances of getting wrestling on the WMT Radio and he responded.

Doubtful. We are prevented from running on our streams and becasue we are the only affiliate, learfield has taken all the potential advertising so we would not be able to generate enough revenue to pay for running it. We would lose money. Blame it on Learfield. We have looked into it bui until they change their policies, it will not happen.

I'll bring this back in the fall.

What does he mean about being the only affiliate? He knows that KXIC broadcasts the meets now, doesn't he? I'm not discounting his assertion that Learfield is offering a lousy deal but that just seemed like a weird statement. I also think it's weird to complain about not being allowed to stream it, since no Hawkeye sports allow streaming and it doesn't stop them from carrying those games.
