IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- It all seemed so very unlike Kirk Ferentz.

There was the 60-year-old Iowa coach, whose approach to football has often been mocked for being too old-fashioned, teasing new ''blackout'' uniforms in front of his Hawkeyes as a song by rapper Rick Ross played in the background.

A fashion show during fall camp?

That would seem to be the last thing the Ferentz of old would ever allow.

''We had some sharp young guys think about some stuff and come up with some ideas and did a little unveiling with our players. It was well-received,'' Ferentz said.

Ferentz couldn't help himself from chuckling that he found it ''amazing'' that anyone would be so interested in new uniforms. Still, it was a sign that Ferentz is trying to adapt to changing times after winning just 34 games in the last five seasons.

''It's a new era, right? New millennium and all that stuff,'' said Ferentz, who will open his 17th season at Iowa on Saturday against Illinois State.

that's the perfect example of the myopic view that a lot of people claim he has towards a lot of different things. he sees it one way and assumes everyone else sees it the same way.

like: I would never try a fake punt, why defend against it?

But he actually did it.

It's undeniable that something has changed with Ferentz since the end of last season. They played a hell of a game against Wisconsin. The Badgers just made the plays when they had to so you can't fault Iowa for that. However, to blow the game in the way they did against Nebraska and then get absolutely embarrassed against Tennessee in the bowl game. Throw in the whole, "That's football" thing. I listened to a recent interview where he admitted that he watched some of the press conferences and that it was a screw up to say that and he understood how it was received on the outside. The On Iowa guys even mentioned that the university may have hired an outside consultant to assist him in dealing with the media. He released the unprecedented January depth chart and then held the press conference to talk with the media. I think he finally understands how bad things have gotten on the outside of the program. I'm not saying that a different coach would be a better fit at Iowa and I have no idea who would replace him but we can't strive for mediocrity while our Big Ten brethren in Michigan State and Wisconsin are soaring to new heights. We are 10-11 in Kinnick Stadium since 2012. That is totally unacceptable. The atmosphere is awful due to the dry, corporate advertising environment and the lack of an exciting product on the field. He has to know that things are getting a little dicey and that his legacy is at stake. For whatever reason we have totally fallen off the grid over the course of the last 5 years and the recruiting has been terrible. I think the program has been energized by the new facility. The recruiting class isn't last minute MAC guys like in years past so they have gotten guys that they evaluated and identified early. This is by far the most important year of the Ferentz regime. Go 8-4 or 9-3 and all is well but go 1-3 or 1-4 in the first few games and things could completely implode. The scary thing is that I see that scenario being very possible but I'm hoping for the best. I would love to see Ferentz 3.0 take us back into the top 25 for one more spin on the merry-go-round of football relevancy.

Yes yes.
My father also had the same problem. A lot of the older generation has this problem. Not saying the younger gen doesn't, but the older gen has some serious issues with this.

"overhaul"?? what overhaul?
An overhaul is replacing an engine. Not vacuuming the carpets and cleaning out the cup holders.

Yeah, I'm not saying he's a completely different person but Kirk has definitely changed this offseason. He has been a lot more open with the media and is embracing a little bit of change. It's nice to see and I'm hoping that Iowa can put together a great season this year!

So sick of this guy and his old hum drum dummy act. REALLY? you didn't know the world entered a new century 15 1/2 years ago Kirk? Downplaying comments like these are not clever, strategic, humble, and surely not "sexy".....Just dumb. Wake up K.F. Get some fire in your belly! Go log onto your Alta-vista and see what the worlds doing! I have some old AOL discs you might want to use too....You should see what the www thinks of your sugar free Hubba Bubba gum chewing game face.
