Our conductor just informed us that the German and Austrian border is closed to most travelers. he advised us to check with the ticket folks in Salzburg on how to get to Munich...and then the ticket folks in Munich on how to get back to Vienna.
According to the conductor, the border has been closed to train travel for over a week. The earliest estimates to re-open the border is October 5. Happy Oktoberfest.
We saw hundreds of Syrian refugees at the train station in Vienna.
