You guys who say "Only Vote Democrat" better start voting for the RIGHT one

Both the Dems and Reps advanced poor candidates. Punishing one favors the other. And I have just a little too much self-preservation in me to not have tried to keep that Con Man and White Collar Criminal Donald Trump out of the White House.

The facts were right in front of us before the election. All the lawsuits, the unpaid laborers, the heavy handed treatment of people will far less power than he, the humiliation of people he didn't like....

In my opinion this was no time to address the favoritism of the DNC as compared to Candidate Trump. And I'd remind, even Bernie realized that!
too much looking at trump and not the Clinton crime family

I grew up with dems. I thought I was a dem back around 1986-1988 or so. Every single person in my family was a dem. Dems are all I have for the most part on facebook, that's why I rarely go on there. I think you have to be a dem to vote in Ottumwa. every teacher I ever had was probably a dem except this one history teacher maybe. Maybe two. I personally think what dems need to win the presidency is this and it would probably work: old school midwestern/union working labor values in a person. That would sell in Wisconsin and penn. { this is probably why iowa loved Obama cause he was from chi-town supposedly but of course we all know he wasn't really} if a person were honest { not like Clinton crime family} hard working { not communist labor or fascist} and they were for reforms and less spending a strong military, strong work force. they could win. and not a socialist east coast person like bern. not a west coast whack job either. strong hard working Midwesterner. Kasich type.

I know more FACTS about both than you can ever hope to absorb. I only WISH extraterrestrials were real so they could pick you up and take you back to their home-world. I'll even throw in a case of aluminum foil, and some green M&M's (the ones the CIA puts LSD in).

you know the facts about hills and bill murdering people and drug dealing in mena Arkansas? if so.... you may want to not advertise it much!

@unIowa, I still don't see how abdicating the responsibility to manage our Federal Government (and yes, we still manage it) is going to help matters.

Nor do I see how an obviously informed individual such as yourself can take the time to understand issues, but won't try to change them.

I have to believe this is an exercise in describing the real problems we have in our electoral processes. And between Citizens United and the long process of earning favor among fellow party members, I agree that finding an independent thinking WELL INTENTIONED (leaves Trump out) politician is very hard.

But I'd still remind that we just had one in Bernie Sanders and he gave Hillary quite a run for her money.

And, at the very least, I think you will agree that even if most of our politicians have ties to special interests, when it comes to international issues there is a big difference between a statesman and a saber rattling fool who could get us into a huge conflict.

I'm going to accept that your views work for you and nothing I say is going to change your mind. I just hope that someday, when you see the opportunity to change things on a national level, you will take it.

This guy gets it, the party is sadly lagging way behind IMO. Quite frankly the democrat party has increasingly been turning their back and sharpening their rhetoric against the very people who they need to win elections...JFK has to be rolling over in his grave as the party has all but abandoned the Kennedy democrats of the past.

Not sure why you think voting 3rd party is a realistic choice? Thousands voted for Nader which got Bush elected. You need to be very careful how you play this card.

I will take 4 years of Trump if it means we get a sane and well functioning democrat party again.

The republican party tried to stop him, they really did but he was just too good at marketing and branding for them to do anything about it. Having 17 candidates didn't help either as it allowed Trumpnado to build momentum.

So essentially the Rep party was hijacked by a nationalist and the democrat party was almost hijacked by a democratic socialist. The fact that happened really shows how poorly of a job our two parties are doing at representing the people.

Would you get over yourself with all this bullshit? The Dems have major flaws but the main reason they keep losing is gerrymandering. Not messaging. Not who they run. Not what they support. It's gerrymandering.

Since 1992, the Republicans have only won the popular vote for the WH once. They've lost 6 out of 7 popular votes. That's not indicative of the Dems not having majority support. It's indicative that all these votes aren't being counted equally.

Stuff I've been saying as well. It was Robert Kennedy, by the way, that warned against losing the blue collar voters.

Keep in mind...like your guy said, there were people there that voted for Obama before voting for Trump.

We had a bad candidate...agreed. But I'm not giving up on the last of the two parties that still has a chance to be managed.

I'm not telling anyone to vote 3rd party. I started the thread to show you how these people you put your trust in are in-the-tank for corporations. It's going to be tough getting universal health care when even the D's are on pharmaceutical and insurance company payrolls.

This needs to be said more often. The majority of this country (and yes, I realize that isn't how presidential elections are won) has wanted a democrat for President in 6 of the last 7 elections. The only time they voted more for an R candidate was after 9/11 and even then W barely beat Kerry.

The dems have many flaws, yes. How come unIowa never pointed out all the flaws of Rs the last 8 years? The truth is he is probably a closet R. Too scared to come out of the closet.

We already know that.

As I said before, and you didn't directly address this point, I have two realistic options. Vote D or vote R. Both are corrupt to some extent and neither truly has my best interest.

However, one of those aligns with my interests much more than the other. D's aren't perfect but they have made MUCH more progress (especially on a social level) than Rs have in my lifetime and in the modern era. Would you at least agree with that statement? Honest question.

Also, no one thought something like the ACA would have passed 20 years ago. UHC is still very possible. It just takes a while to get an archaic system to change. It will happen one day.

Is it giving up or is it sending them a hard message that they clearly hadn't been receiving? The democrat leadership had become tone deaf to the blue collar voters, they needed this loss to shake them back into reality.

Blaming the officials for losing the game...weak, pure weakness and it is soooo unattractive. Maybe the democrat party just doesn't have any type A personalities and that is why it looks like a bunch of whiny babies at the give moment.

You comment constantly on dem leadership.

Give us your thoughts on R leadership. I hardly ever hear you say anything about them. Sure seems like you are anti-dem and not truly "independent" as you like to boast.

The republicans are as much if not more of a mob than the democrat party and they act much in the same way:

1. We are the party of limited govt. - They clearly are not
2. We are the party of fiscal responsiblity. - They clearly are not

They bitched and complained about executive orders and overreach from the executive office but now are ok with it (while democrats were ok with it but now are against it....its just so predicatively stupid). Quite frankly I have little expectations of the republican party outside of stumbling upon and repealing some outdated and/or unnecessarily business regulations so I don't comment on them. I think people should focus on the party they most closely identify with and if I have to choose between the R and D shiteshow I would certainly lean toward the democrat side so that is where I put my comments as their is at least some hope with that party should they choose to get their act together.

Bagging on Trump and republicans is like shooting fish in a barrel and everyone is doing it so I don't really feel the need to do so.

I'm not sure the reality has sunk in for some. On that, I agree with you.

But.

If we can move past what happened and focus on what we need to happen, you and I are no where near the only people saying the Democratic Party has to open it's doors. I'm not going to look 'em up, but there have been plenty of people in the party acknowledging the mistakes that were made.

I know I was a pain in the a$$ to Hillary supporters and actually warned that she could fire up the conservatives. Which she did.

But done, over, time to move on and I'm not waiting until the party is perfect to try to move it in a better direction. For me, that means supporting candidates that recognize the need to support Capitalism for the top, while instituting common sense socialistic protections for those on the bottom.

The free market is a myth. All we can do is allow the players to play and keep the rest comfortable enough to not shoot or bomb us out of existence.

the dems got nothing right now. they need a young stud, right now. kamela harris seems to be a flake. the castro borthers, well, castro. no. not going to happen. hills and bern are old. Elizabeth warren, I know nothing about her but she thinks she's an indian. there is absolutely nothing at all there right now.

(p.s. Obama is from Hawaii...really)

The majority of voters choose Democrats election after election after election. They win virtually all of them. Only by unequally counting votes can the GOP win. Surely you can factor this into your opinion of the situation, right?

Actually, it is simply a fact that gerrymandering is the biggest single reason that Republicans have more congressmen -- it's not vote totals. Look at Virginia; we voted for Hillary, we have a Democrat for governor, both Senators are Democrats, and more people vote for Democrats than Republicans consistently. But because of the way districts are drawn the GOP dominates the House of Representatives.

It's based on the same concept as the electoral college, where rural voters get more representation than urban voters. You can chide somebody for complaining about this, but you can't chide them for merely pointing it out as a statement of fact.

You really lower the level of discourse when you argue with emotions than with facts.

Ok lets say all of that is true, and I am not saying it isn't. So at this point you have two options:

1. You can cry about it and use it as an excuse/barrier as to why you can't win
2. You can accept that it sucks, sack up, and go out and do what it takes to win even when the odds are stacked against you

I tell my kids constantly you can't make excuses and progress at the same time, it is either one or the other (if you are making excuses you are not making progress and if you are making progress you are eliminating excuses). This is a very similar case where you have someone (or entity) that has a leg up on you in some way or another, lets say for the kid example it is either athleticism or natural intelligence so the only way you are going to be able to achieve your goals and beat them is to out work them, out smart them, out hustle them. I REALLY don't like excuse making as ultimately it detracts from one achieving the goals they want to achieve.

Maybe I am just wired differently than you guys in this area.

You really have an amazingly simple view of life. Everything is black and white to you.

Gerrymandering is a fact and not an excuse. No one is using it and then not trying.

You can understand where things are rigged against you and develop a strategic plan to try to win. That pretty much describes Iowa football. Ultimately, from a strategic standpoint, this is where Hillary failed. However, she lost by a mere 77k votes. That would be like Iowa losing in OT to Ohio State and you saying, "Time to rethink every single thing Kirk Ferentz does"

So simple.

winning and losing. that is simple. she got her butt kicked by like a huge amount of people in thousands of counties.

it's like the dems say the goal posts were moved. I guarantee 100% with this gerrymandering thing: if it gets changed, they will have another excuse. guarantee it 100%. I would have to look it up but I bet the dems were in power and did most of the gerrymandering to begin with.

If you think that was a butt whooping, what do you call Obama's win in'08?
I have stated it 100 times on here. He did not win jack crap. he was installed. they had a meeting in Virginia at the Bilderberg meet/hotel. I have also said it on here- that maybe trump was "meant" to win also. he is a freemason I am able to be an open minded conspiracy theorist. the dems won't go down the freemason/new world order road cause it leads to Obama. instead they go down the Russia road with trump and it leads nowhere.
