So I was delighted to see this morning that Latvia upset Canada at the world juniors yesterday. As I was reading the article, I was struck by how almost all of the Lats’ first names ended in s. Turns out that in the lat language nearly all male names do, except for a handful of foreign derived ones ending in o.

That’s very cool on several levels.

First, let me thank you for teaching me something new.

Linguistics is one of my passions.

Trivia here. Japanese women’s names frequently end in -o- .

Sharing new knowledge is cool. Do you like history as well?

Wow. I’m going to have to think on that one.

French and Portuguese, but also English.

All three are Baroque because they are not spelled as they are spoken and they are blends of several languages.

OTOH, I love Japanese for it’s simplicity.

English is unique in that it evolves constantly. It has more words than any other.

Very interesting book written years ago. Frenchman, Englishman, Spaniard, describing the linguistic and cultural differences.

I’ve heard that Portuguese is cool.

I’m a Russian guy: the structural logic of German, the alphabet of Greek, the hard and soft consonants, all those ztsch combinations, and a little French thrown in.

My BIL, Juris can verify this. We don't talk about Russian in his home however...

Yeah, the lats have a thing about that. When my son played hockey in high school, arturs irbe’s son went there (a good golfer). Arturs volunteered as a goalie coach. Amazing stories not only of playing for the national team, but (literally) of manning the barriers when the wall came down and Latvia gained its independence
