On February 22, 1819, the United States acquired Florida from
Spain. James Monroe was President and his Secretary of State
John Quincy Adams signed a treaty with Spain to achieve this.
Officially, this treaty put Florida into U.S. hands at no cost beyond
the U.S. assumption of some $5 million dollars of claims by U.S.
citizens against Spain.
